Bluetooth 3.0 ready to launch on April 21st

It’s not every day we get to talk about the launch of an exciting technology revision that will have a huge and near-immediate impact on the mobile industry, so we’re cherishing the opportunity. And this one is indeed a big one — Bluetooth 3.0. First revealed about a year and a half ago, Bluetooth 3.0 will make use of Ultra-wideband (UWB) wireless technology to achieve transfer speeds of up to 480Mbps. No, seriously. Higher transfer speeds are actually achieved by enabling 802.11 standards when heavy lifting is involved and then switching back to an older, slower standard when big transfers are completed. Reasoning? To slow power consumption and side-step unnecessary battery drain when standard low-bandwidth communications are used. We’re hoping consumer-ready Bluetooth 3.0 devices won’t be far off from the launch, though it will take some time before gear such popular mobile phones take advantage of the technology. Oh and in case you’re wondering, yes, it is pretty ironic that the world will have already gotten a taste of Bluetooth 3.0 in all of its glory… Before Apple handsets support A2DP.

Skyfire begins the hunt for BlackBerry alpha testers

BlackBerrys are great for a lot of things but web browsing just isn’t one of them. The default web browser really isn’t all that suitable for anything more than WAP sites and, well, it’s painfully slow. Because of this, a large number of BlackBerry users turn to third-party browsers such as Opera Mini and Bolt to fill the mobile web void that has been forced upon them. While both are good third-party browsers in their own right, they’re nothing like the amazingly adept Skyfire browser that is available to WinMo and S60 users. A BlackBerry version has long been one of the most wanted BlackBerry apps, but so far Skyfire hasn’t done anything about it. That is, until now. We’ve been receiving a steady flow of tips from elated BlackBerry users who have been offered the chance to alpha test Skyfire for BlackBerry. Testing will begin shortly with Bold users and then be expanded to those with a Curve, Pearl and 8830 (no, there is no mention of the Storm) which means that within the next few weeks some lucky people will be running around with Flash, Quicktime and Silverlight-capable BlackBerrys. Hit up the jump for the email that Skyfire sent out.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Could the Zune HD be on its way soon?

Back in January after we learned that Zune sales and platform revenue was down $100 million under the previous quarter, we asked whether the Zune was ultimately doomed to die an unglamorous death or if Microsoft had an ace up its sleeve. Last night, Engadget posted some images that they feel, based upon some chitchat with sources, are of an upcoming touchscreen PMP known as the Zune HD. Because of the lack of anything other than a few promotional shots we’re going to have to resort to the age-old game of speculation when discussing the Zune HD, but if all of this turns out to be true we think it reasonable to expect that the Zune HD would ship with a display that approaches 720p and (based upon our measurement of the screen in the images) an aspect ratio of 1.85:1 — one of two standard aspect ratios used by mainstream films. But as we say so often in the tech blogging world, we shall see. Would a Zune HD have any chance of finding its way into your pocket or has the Zune ship already sailed for you?

AT&T sabotage plot thickens

The Fiber Felons? The Cable Crooks? The Manhole Mobsters? Whatever you want to call them, it’s looking more and more like an organized team carried out the fiber optic cable cutting we first discussed yesterday. To recap quickly, after the onset of a severe service outage in Northern California on Thursday, it was discovered that fiber belonging to AT&T had been intentionally severed. The result — landline, internet and cellular outages across the region. Now the plot thickens, as this doesn’t appear to be an isolated incident. Following Thursday’s findings, similar cuts have since been discovered in three additional manholes spanning two cities. That’s no accident. While service has been restored to the area, AT&T means business when it comes to bringing the culprits to justice; the $100,000 reward for information leading to convictions has been upped to $250,000. Many speculate this is the handiwork of some disgruntled ex-employees but so far any theories are just that. With the bounty now at $250k however, it might not be long before the solid leads begin to flow.

LG Viewty II might be slated to drop in June

The arrival of the LG Viewty’s successor is rumored to take place some time this June, but only for our good friends in the UK. Jealousy would be an issue towards Orange subscribers across the pond because this iteration packs an 8 megapixel camera with a host of picture/video options, new S-Class 3D user interface, WVGA touchscreen, A-GPS, DivX, Dolby sound, 32GB expandable storage, 7.2 Mbps 3G speed and Wi-Fi. Phones of this capacity seem to be increasingly standard fare these days, but we’re still excited when they launch. If you’re looking to dodge crazy crowds and frantic lines this summer, maybe, don’t let this one slip under your radar.

Sony Ericsson Idou pops up in silver

It’s not every day we can get excited about a Sony Ericsson handset in this day and age, so we cherish every opportunity. Really. Of course ultra-high end isn’t a space the company should be focusing on if it hopes to get things back on track, but it’s great for us so no complaints. The latest round of rumors puts the Symbian-powered Sony Ericsson Idou on sale in October and now that we have a nice clear set of images showing off the silver build, Halloween can’t come soon enough. It’s a sex bomb. Massive 3.5-inch touchscreen, 12.1 megapixel camera with Xenon flash, brushed metal lens guard… It would likely become the most desirable Symbian handset on the market the instant it dropped. Hit the jump for some more shots and try not to drool on your keyboard.

Nokia is bullish on touchscreens; new devices rumored

Holy rumor avalanche. Subscribing to the buckshot method as opposed to the bullet method, TheStreet has just tossed out a whole mess of Nokia rumors to ensure that at least a one or two of them hit. Let’s start at the top… Despite a stunning lack of interest throughout the lifespan of Nokia’s internet tablet line, Nokia is apparently working on yet another IT effort. Supposedly due for release before Christmas, reported specs are confined to a 4.2-inch touchscreen display and a slide out keyboard. Well, at least it’s a safe bet. Next up is a device dubbed “project Nautilus”, due out around mid to late 2010, which features a very slim touchscreen and a sensor-driven slide out QWERTY. According to the report, an ultra-thin keypad slides out from within the device when triggered by a sensor and the keys automatically rise for easier typing. Right then, moving on. A trio of new Nokia touchscreen handsets are seemingly slated for Fall 2009 featuring VibeTonz haptic feedback technology courtesy of Immersion. Very plausible — and we reeeeally hope one of them is the Aeon, wink wink. Last but certainly not least, TheStreet reaffirms that Nokia’s netbook market entrance is a done deal and it will partner with Foxconn to make it happen. Fair enough.

Thanks, Marcel!

HTC Touch Diamond2 to debut in Taiwan later this month

According to the folks over at Mobile Tech Review, the HTC Touch Diamond2 will be hitting the shelves of Taiwanese mobile phone merchants at the end of April. The Touch Diamond2 will be priced at NT$21,900 ($650 USD) and will ship with an 8GB microSD card. The North American counterpart is still MIA with no signs of the NAM version of the handset passing through the FCC and HTC being mum on future release dates. HTC knows we’re all anxious to get our TouchFLO 3D on with this sexy new handset — and its big brother, the Touch Pro2 — so hopefully good news is coming sooner rather than later.

Casio conjures vintage beer commercials to hype Elixim C721

Back in the day, beer makers were faced with a marketing conundrum: How do you draw attention to your product when there really isn’t anything to differentiate it from every other competitive product out there? The answer they came up with… Naked women. These days, scantily clad females are less common in TV commercials here in the US, having been replaced by stupid guys doing funny stuff in beer ads, but that hardly means the spirit of “sex sells” doesn’t still rear its head from time to time. Take Casio’s new online ad for its upcoming Exilim C721. In the eyes of the general consumer there are really only two things that differentiate this handset from any other: a swiveling display and a water resistant case. With that in mind, how can Casio draw attention to its upcoming handset headed to Verizon Wireless? Hit the jump for the answer. On a related note, we hear Casio’s next ad run could be titled Debbie Does Digital.

Tokyo - Amazingland Of The Rising Sun

Here are some of the memories and thought from my short trip to Tokyo in the Land of the Rising SUN. They are normal tourist pictures but also shots of what I sensed while I was there. Yes, I know you probably won't feel those moments the same way as I did but you can let your imagination do the trick for you. This picture is from the imperial japanese gardens called Shinjuku Gyoen and was taken in wintertime! It's a large garden notable especially for the variety of styles featured (the garden's style includes include English, French, and Japanese gardens). A greenhouse filled with tropical plants offers even more variety to this peaceful scene.

Favourite spots:
Tokyo travelogue picture
Before enjoying your japanese dinner - GO to have a beer (you can choose from Kirin, Sapporo, and Asahi) or two in a local pub. Even without knowing any english the japanese waiters provided us with an excellent service. They showed me first the wine bottle in order to know if I agreed to have a glass poured from it. It was a good french chardonnay white wine - no complains. You can see two hot towels on the table. You always get one or several during a meal. HERE COMES THE STRANGE PART: I don't know how common it is but as japanese don't just "drink", we got with our beverages a cup with an almost uncooked egg. The question was how to eat it? Use the given chopsticks !?!!? or just drink it (LOL!!)?

What's really great:
Tokyo travelogue picture
Ginza was the first Japanese attempt to implement Western architecture on a large scale.(15min.on foot from Imperial Palace.) The shift that changed the area that had only contained the Shogun controlled mint into Japan's leading shopping district began at the time of the imperial Restoration in the latter part of the 19th cebtury. Today only the name remains.

MEIJI-JINGU SHRINE
Before reaching the shrine, you pass this ICHI-NO-TORII gate made from 1700 years old cypress tree.

This shrine can be found at Harajuku (HARA = field and SHUKU = place of lodging). It's a beautiful example of SHINTO architecture.
Address:1-1 Kamizonocho, Yoyogi Shibuya-ku
Phone: 3379-5511
Admission: Free
Open: Daily, sunrise - sunset

Harajuku used to be a quiet station for visiters to Meiji Shrine
(The sanctuary dedicated to the Meiji Emperor and his consort.),
but it has changed drastically into the center for what is called Harajuku Fashion.
Both sides of the main road leading from Omotesando Subway Station
are lined with colorful boutiques, cafes, restaurants, and other stylish shops.
The teen fashion center lines on Takesita-dori,
a narrow alley crammed with little boutiques

Before you enter the Shrine you must purify yourself with water

Accommodations:

ETIQUETTES & BEHAVIORS
Here are some of the so many cultural tips you must know before coming to Japan.

TIPPING: it's simple - no tipping.

BILLS: always remember to put your credit card or cash in the little basket on the counter never straights in hands of the cashier.

RESTAURANTS BILLS: in Japan eating and paying do not match. You always pay on your way out UNLESS it is specified at the table that you should do it while still sitting there.

MEALS: you will always get a glass of tea or water when you arrive at your table as well as an * OSHIBORI: In most Japanese restaurants you will immediately be presented with a hot (or cool in the summer) wet towel. This oshibori should be used to wipe the hands clean before dining

...and how do you know your meal has reached the end? Well, you will be presented with a cup of japanese green tea.
...

Hangouts:
Tokyo travelogue picture
...
EATING HABITS:

* eating on the street is considered bad form

* 'Viking' meal = buffet meal

* soup is directly sipped from the bowl and slurpping sounds are acceptable also when eating noodles

* chopsticks should not be sticked vertically into the bowl of rice or pass morsels of food from one pair of chopsticks to another, as this is associated with death

BOWING: as it's the japanese custom everyone should do it including non-japanese. It's a polite gesture as shaking hands is not very common.

Restaurants:
Tokyo travelogue picture
Shabu-Shabu at the rooftop restaurant of the Shinjuku Sumitomo Building

DO NOT LAUGH, SERIOUSLY IT'S THOUGH!

I'm really trying to get hold of some slippery vermiselli with my chopsticks from a Shabu-Shabu Hot-Pot which is filled with boiling broth. You dip vegetables, wagyu a japanese beef with finely marbled flesh (OK) and some japanese nooddles (a nightmare) in it and then in a light sauce before you eat it. YOU SHOULD TRY IT - IT'S A LOT OF FUN even if I'm not laughing just now!

Meanwhile you can enjoy the breathtaking view from the 52nd floor and see all Tokyo at your feet

Some general facts

Here are some general facts and figures to show you how big Tokyo is and that in my 5 days stay I had time only to concentrate on few parts of this huge metropolitan.

HISTORY: EDO the former name of Tokyo in 1800 was at that time the largest city in the world with a population past 1 million.

TODAY: Tokyo is far more than just a city. It is the heart of the most populated urban agglomeration on the planet. Well, NOW I do believe it!! Tokyo (central part + 23 wards) has a population of about 8,9 million people!

The picture is Tokyo New City hall (243m) in Shinjuku
...................
SHINJUKU (which means 'New Lodgings') where two million people pass through each day. It seems that all Tokyo converges here. It is called today 'the city of the future' because of its towering skyscrapers and you might remember it from the films BLADE RUNNER, James Bond's YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE and SOLARIS.

Hong Kong's Adventurous Side: Hills, Mountains and Sea

Trekking up a steep knife-edged ridge, covered in late season grass, the slope gently dropped off on either side. To my right, the green rolling hills were expansive, filling the horizon with a never-ending panorama of undisturbed nature. To my left, an easy bluff eventually gave way to a sharp drop of approximately sixty meters, ending on a sandy beach.

Lazy blue waves broke mildly against the dark jagged forms of age-old rocks. Further out, fishing boat and sampans sailed along the point where sky and earth meet, silently going about their business, as they had since time immemorial.

A warm wind blew across the soft peak, and with the exception of my mates, I was alone, in a peaceful world, recovering from the stresses of modern society. Just a few kilometers away lay the hyper-modern center of Hong Kong, with its busy financial district and high-rise bank buildings.

Most visitors to Hong Kong know the SAR (Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China) as a shopping paradise, famous for fine dining, luxury accommodations, and spending money. But Hong Kong is also a tropical island, covered in green peaks and surrounded by a stunning ocean.

Sailing, ocean kayaking, indoor and outdoor rock climbing, trekking and hiking, paddling, running, cycling, orienteering, paintball, horseback riding, martial arts, and some of the most developed gyms in the world, are just a few of the active vacations available.

A view of Hong Kong Bay

The island offers an excellent alternative for those seeking adventure, without sacrificing comfort. Imagine waking up in a plush hotel, driving forty minutes to a day of rock climbing, and then spending an evening at the theater, followed by a gourmet dinner, and topped off by dancing in a first class night club. You could spend the next day orienteering in the billowy foothills, and your evening sailing in Hong Kong bay.

If you are on a tight budget, you would be surprised at the number of sport activities that are available to Hong Kong tourists for little or no money. For this particular trekking adventure, I hooked up with The Hong Kong Trampers, a club with no administration, no applications and no membership forms. Best of all, the Trampers is a club with no fees.

As they say on their website, "We are a group of friends who enjoy exploring Hong Kong's countryside on Sundays." Each week they go on a new trip. Interested parties can go to their site at hktrampers.com to find out the time and place. The trampers will meet up in a given MTR station, and then head out to the hills.

The author's hiking companions

For Hong Kongers, a trip to the hills is a good way to get some relief from the constant hustle of life in the economic tiger. With a population of 6,898,686 people crammed into an area of only 1,042 sq km, Hong Kong has one of the highest population densities in the world. The population
is nearly 30% of Taiwan, but with only 3% of the landmass.

To truly appreciate how developed the SAR is, you need only to climb to the top of Tai Mo Shan, at 3,143 feet (958 m), Hong Kong's tallest peak. With a gentle mountain breeze cooling your skin, you will feel free as a bird.

Apart from the breathtaking scenery, trekking in Hong Kong can be a great fitness activity, as well as a way of making friends. The day that I met with the Trampers, we were hiking Yung Shue O to Hoi Ha, near Sai Kung Town. The group was made up of fifteen people, ranging in age from eight
to forty-four.

Our eight year-old was a star hiker, who loved going on treks with his father. On this particular weekend, the regulars were discussing which of their members had just completed the Oxfam Trail Walker, a 100 KM walking race, through the attractive island countryside. Other members were training for the Hong Kong marathon, while others had no experience at all.

All the hikers made it to the top.

A group of nice young ladies employed in a Kowloon bank told me that this was their first time doing anything physical in their life. And, while they needed a bit of patience and assistance to
complete the 12 KM course, they all made it.

The trails in Hong Kong are well mapped and marked, with degree of difficulty readily available. So, it is easy for you to find a rout and a distance, which fits your level of physical fitness. Our trek began with a forty-minute climb up the Jacob's ladder to Au Mun.

This was a paved staircase, built into the side of the mountain. It was extremely difficult, but hikers were free to stop, drink water, or rest where needed. Not wanting to lose my macho façade, I tried to keep up with the leaders. When I got to the top, I was completely out of breath, and very concerned about altitude sickness.

"Is it possible to get altitude sickness up here, like those people who climb Mount Everest?" I panted, while I emptied an entire water bottle down my parched throat.

Francis, the leader, was probably both the oldest and fittest of the men in the group and had already run to the top and back down several times, to check on the stragglers. He assured me that although I felt we had just climbed to the sun and would melt, like Inheres, in actuality, we had only ascended five hundred meters

One of the trails up Tai Mo Shan

"Maybe I am a little out of shape." I said, diving into the kilo of chocolate cookies I had planned to eat for lunch.

The group was worried about the bank ladies, who had fallen way behind.

"Do they have GPS?" I asked.

"As long as they stay on the stairs they can't get lost." Said Steven, an American student studying Chinese at the university.

"Maybe I should still leave some cookie crumbs for them to follow." I suggested.

Francis asked for a volunteer to hang back and help the bank ladies. Of course, I jumped at the chance. Not only did this mean that I could go as slowly as I wanted to, without looking like a weakling, but I got to spend the day with some very beautiful girls. Sham, a Singaporean computer technician on holiday also volunteered to help. So I loaded him down with the girls' backpacks, leaving me free to fraternize

The author at the summit

Once the stairs were behind us, the way became much easier. At times the trail took us along a ridge, with a beautiful view of valleys below. At other times, we walked through the forest, under a canopy of green. We crossed streams, and skipped from stone to stone.

There were grassy peaks where we waded through waist-high grass. By the time we made our final descent, we had gotten some much needed exercise, made some new friends, exchanged phone numbers, and most importantly, we had seen a side of Hong Kong most visitors would never know.

Trekking with the trampers was just the first in a long series of adventures I had planned in Hong Kong.

Although not the traditional China of pagodas and pavilions, Shanghai conjures up all the mystery of the Far East. A past of colonial adventurers, shady ladies, and opium dens, it now has a shining future as Asia ’s major hub of economy and trade. Many multinationals whose regional headquarters were in Hong Kong and Singapore have already relocated here.

China’s most cosmopolitan city, Shanghai is also its richest and largest. Although estimates vary, general consensus puts the population of its greater municipal area at around 18 million people. And that’s truly beyond megalopolis.

Even for a city at the cutting edge of China’s economic miracle, the pace of change has been astounding. Back in 1985, for example, Shanghai possessed one skyscraper.

Now its skyline is crowded with around 3,000 buildings that tower 18 stories or higher. Everybody knows about the air-conditioned megamalls — a new one seems to spring up every month — but it was only about 11 years ago that the city’s first convenience store opened. Today it has more than 5,000.

Western supermarkets, such as Carrefour and Wal-Mart, international schools, hospitals and clinics, top-class restaurants and posh hotels abound where you can blow China’s average annual rural wage in just one night. Factor in the booms and busts of Shanghai’s highly speculative real estate market, and it’s easy to forget that you’re in a Communist country.

Though shackles have loosened, information remains tightly controlled. Throughout my 18-day visit to China, it was impossible to access the BBC news website even once.

Opium for Tea and Silk

Separated by the Huang Pu River, Shanghai divides into two slices. The west side, home to the city’s older quarters, is known as Puxi. The east, all brand-new, is called Pudong New Area.

With a sci-fi skyline fronting the river, Pudong is the location of Lujiazui, Shanghai’s business and financial district. Its most extraordinary edifice is the Oriental Pearl Television Tower. It puts you in mind of a hypodermic syringe spearing a giant pink onion.

It’s no doubt unintentional, but the syringe image seems apt for a city whose fortunes were founded on opium. In the 19th century, Britain’s gunboat diplomacy forced China to open up to foreign trade. As one of the country’s major ports, Shanghai was on the front line.

Trade figures concerned the Victorians as much as they do today’s politicians. Flooding China with opium from the poppy fields of the Indian subcontinent, the British were more than happy to see Shanghai’s people puffing themselves witless. They justified their drug trafficking activities on the grounds that opium was the only commodity China would buy in exchange for tea and silk. By 1870, opium accounted for 43% of China’s total imports.

France and other colonial powers wanted a piece of the action, too. As a result, Shanghai was divided into foreign “concessions,” where Chinese law held no sway. Reveling in its sobriquet of the “Whore of the Orient,” the city attracted fortune builders and ne’er-do-wells in equal measure. During its 1930s heyday, Shanghai rocked like tomorrow would never come.

The good times crashed when the Communists took power in 1949. They closed down the brothels, gambling palaces, dance halls, and opium dens, and rounded up the gangsters, gamblers, drug-smugglers, and profiteers.

The Chinese Communist Party was founded in this building.

Colonial Edifices

Today’s Shanghai still has its shady places — according to local sources, karaoke bars are often fronts for various forms of vice. But for most visitors, yesteryear’s decadent glamour exists only in the imagination.

And one’s imagination has to work hard. Much of the old city has already been bulldozed in order to transform Shanghai into a shiny high-rise metropolis. A few teeming pockets of back-alley life remain, but the best places to see the remnants of pre-communist Shanghai are in the leafy streets of the former French Concession and along the riverside area known as the Bund. Here, imposingly grand edifices built during the colonial era gaze across to the futuristic towers of Pudong.

With wide sidewalks and attractive parks, much of downtown Shanghai seems surprisingly spacious. The only place I felt the pressure of madding crowds was in the Old Town bazaar and the Yuyuan Gardens neighborhood that lies southeast of the Bund.

The Old Town bazaar is undoubtedly photogenic, with its fishponds, zigzag bridge, and wooden shop houses topped by traditional curved roofs. But it is touristy, and you’re not seeing the real thing. The area was renovated into a few blocks of touristy theme streets in 1999. Unless you’re into novelty shops, ersatz antiques, and teahouses where you cannot get a seat, you can safely give it a miss.

The New Decadence

Whether it’s Swarovski crystal or designer boutiques, Shanghai’s newly affluent have embraced consumerism as enthusiastically as their 19th-century counterparts reached for the opium pipes. Shopping is definitely the new decadence.

With air-conditioned malls and flashy department stores, the city’s premier shopping street is Nanjing Lu. It’s partly closed for pedestrian traffic only, and at night the neon-lit signs dazzle as brightly as those in Hong Kong. Prices for Western designer brands seem even higher than back home, but you can get great buys on shoes. While I was browsing, my husband picked up stylish leather loafers for the equivalent of $13.50. One big annoyance is the hordes of fake Rolex and Prada handbag merchants that attach themselves like limpets to any passing Westerner.

“Boo yow” — I don’t want it. If you learn only one Chinese phrase, this is a good choice.

Another view of the Pudong skyline

More popular with locals, Huaihai Zhong Lu is another major shopping street arrowing through the French Concession area. If you’re still not satiated, take the under-river train through the weirdly psychedelic Bund Tunnel to Pudong. You’ll emerge almost beside the monumental Super Brand Mall. With a floor of restaurants, juice bars, and coffee shops, it’s also a great place for lunch. I paid less than $5 for a noodle hotpot and a beer.

For items like silk, calligraphy brushes, porcelain tea sets, and handicrafts, the best buys are often in the markets. But if you’re looking for jade or antiques, be careful. Guidebooks warn that at least 85% of goods at Dongtai Lu Antique Market (on the eastern edge of the French Concession) are fakes.

Before buying any high-value item, take a look at the genuine objets d’art in the state-run Shanghai Antique & Curio Store (196-246 Guangdong Lu). Prices are high, but you’ll get an idea of what a real porcelain vase or jade dragon should look like. But note that you may have to relocate to enjoy your treasures. Genuine antiques more than 200 years old cannot be exported out of China.

Mao memorabilia is everywhere. I succumbed and paid 5 yuan (60 cents) for a red-tasseled dangly thing with a portrait of the Great Helmsman embossed in gilt. I undoubtedly possess the tackiest car decoration in the west of Ireland.

Expat Encounters

Although competition is far fiercer than a decade ago, some individuals have carved out a Shanghai niche for themselves. One evening, I met International Living subscriber Mario Cavalo in a French Concession bar called Senses, with low lights, comfy couches, and an extensive wine list.

When not indulging his passion for playing jazz piano (catch him on the keyboards at Senses on Thursday evenings; the bar is at 515 Jianguo Xi Lu near the American Consulate), Mario arranges conferences and corporate training. He’s set up his own company, Vision to Victory, and his latest gig is for Shanghai’s German Chamber of Commerce. He’ll be taking clients to the silver-sand beaches of Sanya, the premier resort on Hainan Dao, China’s tropical vacation island.

To be a successful entrepreneur, you’ll need to emulate Mario and learn Mandarin. Although TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) teachers are keenly sought throughout China, merely having a degree and the ability to speak English isn’t a guaranteed passport into Shanghai’s job market. For one thing, huge numbers of home-grown graduates who have learned English are now in the workplace.

Most expatriates are on company assignments. Management-level employees usually get “the full expat package,” which includes private health care, luxury-level rental accommodation, and private schooling for kids. Dawn Brandenburg of Savills Property Services estimates that Shanghai has between 50,000 and 60,000 Western expats, 100,000 Japanese, and another 200,000 “compats” from Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Take Your Earplugs

The three-star Metropole Hotel seemed a good choice when I booked a double room for a discounted $81 through hotels.com. (Shanghai hotels are expensive.) Built in the Art Deco 1930s, it’s less than a 10-minute walk from the Bund’s riverside promenade.
Unfortunately, its soundproofing is disastrous. The cacophony of horn-blaring starts before first light. Bicyclists, peddlers with handcarts, a tailback of cars heading toward People’s Square… each frustrated driver seemed intent on making enough noise to wake an entire neighborhood of ancestral spirits.
Look for other unique Shanghai hotels and interesting Shanghai tours online.

An Insider’s Guide To Bangkok

Just about any visitor to Southeast Asia has to pass through Bangkok. Some people loathe it; others swear it is one of the most fascinating, wonderful and exciting places on earth.

Truthfully, Bangkok can be anything a visitor wants it to be; a picturesque Asian postcard crammed with beautiful palaces, and pagodas; a haven with some of the world's finest hotels; a place to let loose and enjoy the most renowned nightlife in the Orient; a chance to savor one of the world's unique cuisines; one of Southeast Asia's best shopping destinations.

And wherever you go in Bangkok, you'll be struck by the friendly, easy way of Thais. Life is sanuk, their word for fun. And with an insider’s view of this fascinating city, you will find it sanuk, too!

Although Thai history reaches back to the Bronze Age, Bangkok is a relatively young city, founded in 1782. It has one-tenth of the country's population, about six million people, half under the age of thirty. The city is embraced by the Chao Phraya River of Kings, a glorious working waterway filled with sampans, rice barges, and boats of every imaginable description.

Buddhist temples (wats), high-rise office buildings, luxury hotels, and shopping malls dominate a kaleidoscopic Bangkok skyline blend of old and new. But get beneath the thin veneer of Western influence, and you'll discover Thais have not lost traditional values. Witness ubiquitous street food vendors, monks on early morning begging rounds, and women stringing jasmine blossoms near shrines, and you'll agree ancient culture has been reserved.

BANGKOK CULTURE BASICS

It’s important to know a bit about Thai culture to really discover the inside of the country and of the city.

Buddhism
Theravada Buddhism is the professed religion of more than 90% of all Thais and casts a strong influence on daily life, although the Thais have always subscribed to religious freedom. Christian, Hindu, Muslim, and Jewish minorities freely pursue their respective faiths.

Buddhism, more a way of life than a religion, has one aim only: to abolish suffering. It is a flexible, moral, and philosophical framework where people fashion their own salvation. Buddhists believe a person's life does not begin with birth and end with death but continues in an afterlife premised on their behavior in the present life. Earthly impermanence does much to create the relaxed, carefree Thai character, certainly one of the appealing attractions of the country.

The King
As a symbol of hope, the king, a man who works tirelessly for his people, has earned great respect. He acts as a decisive mediator in times of unrest. Few can achieve what King Blumibol can with a word or quiet request. The longest reigning king in the world, he is the glue that holds society together. An accomplished jazz musician and talented photographer, he was born in the United States and educated in Switzerland.

Today, Thailand has a growing democracy and an established rule of law. Its military does not play the dominant role it once did.

MAJOR ATTRACTIONS

Bangkok has more attractions packed into each square mile than most cities. The major attractions are definitely worth seeing; just ignore the crowds and appreciate the architecture and culture of the sights.

Wat Phra Khao and the Grand Palace top all lists for sightseeing; allow a half day. Include nearby Wat Pho and the National Museum. Chinatown's traditional life, unaffected by modern civilization, is fascinating. The historical sites of Rattanakosin Island, the focal point of public life when Bangkok was founded, are also worth a visit, and Wat Arun on the Chao Phraya River is often considered the symbol of Bangkok.

Cross the river to Thonburi and tour the canals (klongs) to appreciate the culture and heritage of Thailand. The golden teak Vimanmek Palace, restored by Queen Sirikit, reflects the exquisite taste and splendor of bygone Thai court life. The Royal Barge Museum houses the king's barges with mythical figureheads. Jim Thompson, founder of the Thai silk industry, left an unmatched legacy of Asian fine art in his residence near Siam Square.

Banglampoo, Pra Athit and Khao San Road, a very popular area of inexpensive restaurants, cheap rooms, street vendors and budget-level fun, is a short walk from the Phra Athit express boat pier. Taxi drivers know it well. There are no real "sights" here, but the street life and bustle are entertaining. Young Western and Asian backpackers lounge around beer bars to share experiences and offer advice on how to travel Southeast Asia "on the cheap."

UNUSUAL ATTRACTIONS

While Bangkok’s major attractions are a bit on the unusual side, the city also offers a tremendous wealth of fascinating attractions off the main tourist path.

Ko Kret
About five miles north of Nonthaburi, the Chao Phraya River cuts the land and rings it, forming an island off Pakkred. Here on Ko Kret, a settlement of Mon descendents is slowly gaining more tourist attention. Mon artisans possess remarkable skills in crafting terracotta pots, jars, and other high-quality products. The 7,000 residents keep the island car-free. Boats, motorcycles, bicycles,
and walking provide transport around the area. A well-kept museum has a bountiful collection of valuable terracotta items, and the Mon cultural center was established to keep alive dying Mon identity.

Ko Kret's main attraction is a landscape filled with clay pots, kilns, and mortars, and an authentic ancient lifestyle more and more difficult to find.

Chao Phraya Express boats leave from the southern Wat Ratchsingkhorn Pier for the 90-minute journey to Pakkred. A boat tour around Ko Kret costs 200 baht.

Museum of the Department of Corrections

Your impression of the gentle nature of Thai people will be somewhat dispelled, if you visit this museum at Bangwang Central Prison in Nonthaburi. Take the express boat to Nonthaburi, walk past the clocktower, turn left, and walk a third of a mile along the wall of the prison to the entrance at the Correctional Staff Training Center.

Founded in 1939, this museum of ancient torture shows many of the grim methods used to execute prisoners during the Ayutthaya Period, the most notable being a huge rattan ball whose inner lining was studded with sharp spikes. The prisoner was placed inside and the ball given to elephants to kick around. In a most understated remark, the guidebook to the museum notes, "The offender will be hurt by many big sharp nails inside." Another memorable quote from the guide: "The executed prisoner's fingerprints will be taken for examination in order to ensure that he was not the wrong person."

There is no charge to enter the museum, and a staff member will gladly escort you around.

Wat Chalaw

In 1984, work began on magnificent Wat Chalaw, a Buddhist temple twice the size (over 300 feet long) of the King's Royal Barge it resembles, although the history of the small temple it replaces goes back 500 years. Located in Bang Kruay, a small, traditional village in northern Nonthaburi Province across the Chao Phraya River from Bangkok, the still unfinished temple is one of the most outstanding architectural undertakings ever attempted in Thailand. When completed in a couple of years, at a cost of several million dollars and countless hours contributed by the good citizens of Bang Kruay, visitors will be guaranteed a sight to stir even the most jaded traveler. It’s worth a visit now.

To get there, take the express boat to Nonthaburi Pier, cross the river by ferry and continue by bus or motorbike for ten minutes to the town. Taxis are an alternative, but be sure the driver understands where you want to go. Longboats traveling on Thonburi waterways also pass by the town.

Little-known Wat Clusters
To minimize crosstown traffic delays when visiting Buddhist temples, the following, not often visited, wats are in the same general area, near the Democracy Monument:

  • Wat Rajanada
    An architectural Burmese-style wonder.
  • Wat Sakhet
Atop a hill with good views of Bangkok, one of the city's oldest wats.
  • Wat Sukhat and the Giant Swing
One of the most important wats in Bangkok.
  • Wat Indravihan
An impressive Buddha, deserving more attention.

Tha Chin River Area
Located a half-hour drive from Bangkok in Sam Phran district of Nakhon Pathom province, the area hugging the calm Tha Chin River, said to be the cleanest river in Thailand, maintains its old charm and rural life style. Old traditions are passed down from one generation to another in the three small communities that line the river. If you want to explore pristine rural life of fruit orchards, Thai-style houses, temples, shophouses, and a fish sanctuary, this area near the Rose Garden Resort is worth your time.

Busses leave from Bangkok's Southern Bus Terminal for Don Wai.

Baiyoke Sky Tower
Rising 94 stories above the Bangkok skyline and surrounded by bustling shopping and entertainment attractions, the new Baiyoke Sky Tower Observation Deck is worth a visit with telescopes and information about Bangkok at the visitor's fingertips via a special computer system. The tower exhibits include a small Thai House, a tuk tuk, and a photo gallery of Bangkok's distant past. 222 Rajprarop Road.

Ancient City & Crocodile Farm
Covering 200 acres and the approximate shape of Thailand, Ancient City is the world's largest outdoor museum, located about 20 miles southeast of Bangkok. It was built about 25 years ago and has small replicas of every major landmark in the country. Ancient City is the history of Thailand in miniature.

You can travel to the park on our own, but your visit will be much more rewarding if you take a tour with the benefit of a guide to describe the landmarks. Ancient City Co. at Ratchadamnoen Avenue (Tel: 224 - 1936/7) organizes tours, or you'll find the trip among those listed on sandwich boards outside the offices of most travel agents. This unique outdoor museum is open from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily and charges 50 baht for adults and 25 baht for children.

The Crocodile Farm is about 1 mile from Ancient City. In addition to 30,000 crocodiles, the dinosaur museum has 13 species of life-size creatures.

Caddies are generally young females who carry your bag, clean your ball, give you the distances, and even read your putts, hopefully not your mind. You'll often have two accompanying you, one with an umbrella to shield you from the tropic sun and one to carry your bag.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has an excellent, well-illustrated brochure titled Golf in Thailand with the top 75 courses profiled in color.

ALTERNATIVES

Learning

The Siam Society
Bangkok's Siam Society was founded in 1904 under Royal Patronage with the objective of researching and gathering information on the arts and sciences of Thailand and neighboring countries. The society sponsors lectures and artistic performances and regularly organizes one to seven day tours of cultural interest. All are conducted in English and led by prominent educators or Society members. The Natural History Section offers excursions for nature lovers. Tour groups are usually limited to 40, which fill a bus, the usual mode of transportation.

The Kamthieng House on the Society's grounds, a quiet oasis in the center of hectic Bangkok, is a historical treasure of 19th Century northern Thai architecture and artifacts. The house was dismantled in Chiang Mai, shipped to Bangkok and re-assembled in the Society's garden compound. The Society's unique library houses approximately 29,000 volumes on Southeast Asia.

For scheduled events and tours, contact the Siam Society, 13 Soi Asoke, Sukhumvit 21, Bangkok 10110. Tel: 661-6470/7, Fax: 258-3491.siam-society.org, e-mail: info@siam-society.org

TOURING

It’s easy to base in Bangkok and explore the region through a series of interesting and unusual daytrips.

Ayutthaya & Bang Pa-In
The most popular day trip from Bangkok is probably the visit to Ayutthaya (A-you-ta-ya), the old capital of Thailand, about 50 miles north of the city. For over 400 years, Ayutthaya served as the second capital of the Kingdom of Siam. European travelers described its glittering temples, palaces, and Buddhist images as one of the most beautiful cities on Earth. Unfortunately, the city met its end in 1767 when the Burmese razed the glories of Ayutthaya. You can easily make the trip to Ayutthaya and Bang Pa-In on your own by train, an hour and a half ride from Hualamphong Station, or by bus from the Northern Bus Terminal.

When you arrive in Ayutthaya, hire (250 baht is a fair price) a tuk tuk with an English-speaking guide to show you the celebrated temples. Then hire (300 baht is a good price) a long-tail boat for the 12-mile Chao Phraya River trip to the king's summer palace at Bang Pa-In; return to Bangkok from Bang Pa-In by train.

Bridge Over the River Kwai & Kanchanaburi
The most moving part of a trip to Thailand is a visit to the infamous bridge over the River Kwai near the Burmese border, about 75 miles west of Bangkok in Kanchanaburi. David Lean's 1957 epic film, "The Bridge on the River Kwai," immortalized the location. Today, the rebuilt bridge and Kanchanaburi are major tourist attractions. In late November through early December "Bridge On the River Kwai Week" offers an impressive Sound and Light presentation recreating the historical event.

Nakhon Pathom & Buddha Monthon
Nakhon Pathom, 35 west of Bangkok, is a convenient stopover on the way to the River Kwai. The main attraction is the Phra Pathom Chedi clad in orange tiles and rising almost 400 feet, the tallest Buddhist monument in the world and the oldest in Thailand. Many believe it marks the spot where Buddhism was introduced to Thailand 2,300 years ago. Along the way, Buddha Monthon is one of Thailand's most beautiful.

Leave from the Southern Bus Terminal for the one-hour ride to the chedi.

Rose Garden Country Resort
This popular, though touristy, attraction is 20 miles west of Bangkok on the bank of the Thachin River. The main feature is a daily cultural show at 3 p.m. featuring Thai dances, a Thai wedding, Thai boxing, bamboo dancing, and other cultural events.

For those with limited time, the Rose Garden offers good insight into local traditions. Admission to the gardens is 10 baht and 220 baht for the cultural performances. The park is open daily with shuttle buses between the resort and major Bangkok hotels. Tel: 295-3261.

ACCOMMODATIONS

By any world standard, Bangkok hotels can't be beat for value received. Forget published room rates. In Thailand's depressed economy, hotel room prices are as negotiable as carpets in the souks of Marrakech. Walk-in reduced rates, corporate discounts, frequent guest programs, Bangkok travel agent contracted rates, and special promotions often save you up to 50% off rack rates.

Top-end hotels are located along the river, near Siam Square, the Queen Sirikit Convention Center, and major shopping and entertainment intersections with prices in the US$100 range. Chinatown, Khao San Road and Banglampoo offer rock bottom room rates, often less than US $10 a night.

Hint: Bangkok travel agents offer highly discounted room rates for all classes of hotels. Book your arrival night before you leave home and shop the agents for subsequent lodging.

    FOOD

Thai food currently enjoys worldwide popularity not just in ethnic and local neighborhoods, but at fashionable city addresses as well. Travelers to Bangkok quickly learn to enjoy the great scope of Thai cuisine; freshness, subtle flavors, and an artful presentation of dishes, street food excepted. Add mai ped (not too spicy) to your vocabulary if hot food disagrees with you.

Thais are inveterate snackers, and street food hawkers with stone mortar, charcoal stoves, water buckets, umbrellas, and chairs supply the essentials. Don't hesitate to try these inexpensive wok concoctions, but watch how the cooking utensils are cleaned. Many Thai people find it's cheaper to buy from local street vendors than to prepare meals at home.

Continental and Asian cuisines are often served in lavish hotel dining rooms and Western-style restaurants, and no matter where you are, you'll be near an American franchised fast food shop flaunting familiar signs.

  • Cabbages and Condoms is a highly recommended Thai dining experience in the Sukhumvit area. (See Restaurant with a Mission for more info)

  • NIGHTLIFE & ENTERTAINMENT

Name it and you'll find it in Bangkok. Jazz, blues, and country-western clubs are found along Sarasin Road near Lumpini Park. Major hotels have popular discos and the Hard Rock Café, Planet Hollywood make their presence known. The NASA Spacedrome Disco packs in 4,000 on busy nights (Tel: 324-3368). Silom Road Soi 4 caters to the gay scene, yuppies and hippies.

The National Theater (Tel: 221-5861) and Thai Cultural Center (Tel: 247-0028) schedule classical dance recitals, the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, and performing arts groups.

For some less traditional nighttime entertainment, the transvestite Calypso Cabaret holds forth in the Asia Hotel (Tel: 261-6355). The Mambo Cabaret (Tel: 259-5128) brings in 600 nightly to check out the cabaret's claim for having the most beautiful transvestites. These shows are more likely to amuse (or confuse) than offend.

If you are at all unsure about Bangkok’s notorious red light districts and loose policies on prostitution, avoid the infamous Patpong, Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy areas. The brand new Clinton Plaza near the Ambassador Hotel is also one of the main arenas for male patrons seeking earthy pleasures. Today, however, Patpong is almost as well known for its nightly bazaar as for its sleazy bars.

    SHOPPING

Thai silks and cottons, silverware, brass and bronzeware, pewterware, pottery and celadon, lacquerware, precious stones and finished jewelry, antiques and neo-antiques, and a dazzling assortment of folk handicrafts are popular traditional products. Decorative items and well-designed teak furniture satisfy discriminating shoppers. Tailors and dressmakers offer reliable services. Your shopping challenge is knowing what to buy and where to buy it; quality varies considerably. Electronic goods and camera equipment are expensive.

    Markets

Modern, air-conditioned malls and plazas, rivaling the best in the world, are rapidly replacing street vendors. But sidewalk shopping remains a citywide affair, and Bangkok's flea markets are alive and well. The Pratunam street market near the Indra Hotel along Rajapraprop Road devotes one side of the street to fruits and food products, the other side to apparel, costume jewelry, handbags, and gift items.

Street vendors on upper Silom Road near Rama IV Road and Sukhumvit Road from Soi 11 to Ploenchit Road cater to tourist tastes. At night, Patpong packs more stalls selling fake goods and handicrafts in a short block than you thought possible.

The biggest and most fascinating market is the Chatuchak Weekend Market, held on Saturday and Sunday at Chatuchak Park near the Central Plaza Hotel and across from the Northern Bus Terminal. Conveniently located at the northern Skytrain terminal, it covers 31 acres with 5,000 stalls selling everything imaginable. Be warned; it is easy to get lost, so pick a landmark for your bearings. The clock tower near the entrance is a good one.

If you have time, buy a drink and some wok concoction at one of the food stalls, and watch the parade: Thai families, Christian nuns, monks, Hill Tribe people from the north, and a kaleidoscope of humanity you will not find anywhere else on earth. It beats Parisian sidewalk cafes by a mile.

Note: Small shops and street vendors expect bargaining. Generally, you can probably settle for half the original asking price.

But, if you can’t handle the haggling, visit Narayana Phand, across from the World Trade Center on Ratchadamri Road next to Gaysorn Plaza and near the Erawan Shrine. Established about a half century ago, this shop is a joint venture between the Royal Thai Government and the private sector and worth a special trip. Shop here for Thai handicrafts and local products. You're guaranteed high quality and reliable merchandise at reasonable prices. Check out their new website at http://www.naraiphand.com.

    HAPPENINGS

Most visits to Bangkok coincide with a national holiday or local celebration. Most of these are celebrated in true Thai style in the city and surrounding areas. Below are the major happenings.

Magha Puja, an important Buddhist holy day.
    Chinese New Year

    GETTING THERE

Although a few visitors arrive by freighters docking near Bangkok's Klong Toey Port, and tourists cross the border north from Malaysia by train, seventy percent of all visitors to Thailand arrive by air at Don Muang International Airport, about 15 to 20 miles from most city hotels. The airport is a major hub for travels throughout Southeast Asia offering state-of-the-art facilities. Immigration and customs arrival procedures are effortless.

The air-conditioned Airport Bus, one of Bangkok's best-kept secrets, is the best option for getting to your hotel. Apart from the low fare, about 100 baht (US$2.50), the service is clean, safe, fast, easy to use and with plenty of luggage space. It operates every fifteen minutes along three routes until midnight. The attendant will direct you to the route serving your hotel.

The Public Taxi Stand immediately outside the airport arrival area is a good second choice with a 250 baht (US$6.25) fare into town. Ignore touts inside the airport who approach you. Ordinary bus and train travel into Bangkok is available, but what you might save isn't worth the inconvenience.

    GETTING AROUND

Time, rather than distance, is important when planning travels around the city. Metered taxis are cheap, clean, reliable, and air-conditioned; just be sure the driver uses the meter. Air-conditioned busses are inexpensive and easy to use; buy the latest Bangkok Bus Map, available at newsstands and bookstores.

Express water taxi service on the Chao Phraya River avoids city road traffic and provides great sightseeing. Rented long-tail boats are a convenient way to sightsee if you don't mind the familiar sound of a leaf blower or a weed whacker; bargain with the owner (a 300 baht hourly fee is fair) at the landing near the Oriental Hotel.

Bangkok's new Skytrain, in operation less than a year is state-of-the-art and easy to use. Fares range from 20 baht to 40 baht. Two lines bring you close to most tourist destinations. Highly recommended.

Bangkok's sidewalks always seem to be in some state of repair or disrepair. You can easily stumble, twist an ankle, walk into puddles or, worst of all, fall into an open sewer trench. Having said that, there's no more enjoyable way to explore Bangkok than on foot. Simply walk with care.

One wheel at the front, two at the back, a motorbike engine with handlebars for steering, and a slippery plastic seat cover over the back wheels with a not-too-protective cover, and you've defined the tuk tuk, Bangkok's unique local transportation. Low-price metered taxis have relegated the tuk tuk to the tourist trade and local family transport.

Driving in Bangkok is not for the faint-hearted. In spite of signs and speed limits, anything goes. A Rule of Thumb: the right of way usually belongs to the larger vehicle. Forget this option.

    WEATHER

Bangkok enjoys a tropical climate with three distinct seasons. The average annual 83°F. can climb to 95°F. during the March through May hot summer months. Ruled by monsoons from the southwest, the rainy season prevails from June through October with river flooding sometimes occurring in early fall. Weather conditions are most temperate from November through February, the ideal months to visit the city. Bangkok is hot and humid mid-day at any time of the year.

    HEALTH & SAFETY

Thais are hygiene-conscious. Most restaurants have high standards of cleanliness. Don't become paranoid to the point where you may miss one of the joys of Thailand, Thai food. Drink bottled water.

The government's campaign to educate people on preventive measures for AIDS and sexually-transmitted diseases has slowed the incidence of infection, but the risks remain very real in a country whose thriving sex industry is well known. Major hospitals are first rate; in particular, the Bumrungrad Hospital at 33 Sukhumvit Soi 3, Tel.667-1000

By international standards, Bangkok is a safe city, but petty crime is always common in areas where tourists gather. Thailand is no exception. Use common sense.

    VISAS AND OTHER OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS

Bangkok is also the place to pick up visas for other nearby Southeast Asian countries such as Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Most travel agencies can arrange these for you, or you can go directly to the consulates of the respective countries and apply in person.

    MONEY

The basic unit of currency is the Thai baht, worth about two and a half US cents. Don't waste valuable time trying to find the best dollar exchange rate. There's very little difference with the exception of poorer rates offered by hotel cashiers. Travelers Checks and credit cards are accepted everywhere. ATMs are readily available.

    COMMUNICATIONS

Cybercafes are plentiful and cheap; expect to pay about four US cents a minute. Check netcafeguide.com for locations.

Interntational telephone calls from Bangkok are very easy and most city hotels–especially the larger ones--have international direct-dial phones. Use your phone card; it’s much cheaper.

    So long, CTIA 2009

Now that CTIA 2009 has come and gone we wanted to take a step back and reflect on what was most definitely a show unlike any CTIA in recent years. It was great to hit the floor and catch up with a bunch of companies to talk tech of course, but anyone in attendance will tell you the show was slow. Very slow. Painfully slow. Hell, even Billy Crystal didn’t bother to show up. An interesting though unofficial note: The vendor count was up this year — significantly — or so we were told. Attendance was way down however, as was the amount of newsworthy announcements from the big boys. Blame it on the economy if it helps, but the number of new (and potentially significant) handset announcements from big manufacturers at the show can be counted on one hand. With three fingers.

Luckily there’s already a light at the end of the tunnel as this Summer we’ll definitely see things pick up. Palm will finally let people touch the Pre — and maybe even buy it. The BlackBerry 9630 will be out and we’ll be hitting you with info about the next up and coming handsets from RIM. HTC will have released the Touch Pro2 and the Touch Diamond2. Apple will be dropping a new iPhone or two… Things will be exciting again and hopefully enough momentum will be generated to help the industry as a whole begin to rebound. In the meantime, like the guy in front of us at Al Gore’s keynote, we’ll all be doing our best not to fall asleep.

Below is an initial e-mail I received from a client. He originally tried to modify his loan on his own and when he first contacted us, he gave us some background on his situation. To protect his privacy, we have excluded his name. However, his e-mail is a common experience that homeowners are having when they try to reach their banks and try to get something done for themselves.

Anyway, here’s the e-mail to give you an idea of what homeowners are going through with their lenders:

“I’ve been trying to modify my loan since October 2008. After sending in what I thought was the application form, including supporting documents: Proof of income, monthly bank statements and a hardship letter. After calling the bank numerous times to get an update on my modification, I was told that it was still sitting in a pile of other modifications and it would be looked at as soon as they get around to it. Finally, after 3 months, in January I received a letter from the modification person at Washington Mutual that they were reviewing my file and upon analysis they would determine if they needed anything else to reach a decision. I tried contacting my loan officer every week trying to get a status update, which she has only returned my call twice, I then called customer service and they said, while I was talking with them on the phone, the loan officer was typing in the system that my file was being denied because it was incomplete due to missing income statement, bank statements and hardship letter. I then tried calling the loan officer stating that of course they would not be up-to-date if I sent the file in October. The loan officer never called me asking for recent paperwork and just decided to close the file based on this information. My current loan went from a payment of $1221.00 to $2903.00. Now I’m 4 months behind in my mortgage and need some serious help cutting through the RED tap. My mortgage is more than 48% of my take home income, which is more than the 31% that the recent Home Modification calls for, therefore I should be a perfect candidate for a modification.”

This is a common story and one our company hears daily. Homeowners are under the impression that if your monthly mortgage payment is more than 38% of your income then you qualify under Obama’s plan. Most people’s payment is more than 38% of their income these days and as we all know, the banks will not be able to modify the terms for everyone in this case. In addition, the income percentage is not the only basis for qualifying. First, most banks have not put this plan into place so it will still be awhile before customers benefit from it. Technically, banks have until December 31, 2009, before they have to decide if they want to participate in the plan so they are not moving very quickly to put these guidelines into place.

From a homeowner’s perspective, the experience I noted from the client above is a common experience for people that try to modify on your own. As I’ve said many times, I recommend that homeowners call their bank to see how open they are to helping you. However, from most clients who call us after trying to talk to their bank, they want to pull their hair out because the experience is so frustrating.

We can answer your questions on how to make your experience less agonizing when you call your bank. The main reason it is recommended to go through a modification company is because we should always be able to get you better terms on your loan than you can get yourself because we have been doing this awhile and we know the hot buttons for most banks. That being said, it doesn’t mean you have to go through a modification company. You can try to do it on your own. At the same time, if we can assist in making the process less painful for you when you do talk to your bank, we are here to help.

    Why Obama’s Modification Plan Isn’t Working…

Over the last month I spent a lot of time talking to homeowners specifically discussing President Obama’s modification plan. Most homeowners held out great hope that this plan would help them finally get out of their financial mess and possibly save their home if they were in danger of losing their home in foreclosure.

Well the plan came out March 4th and I can personally tell you that the plan has only made things worse. First, the plan still leaves it up to lenders to decide whether or not they want to help you. Lenders actually have until December 31, 2009 to implement the plan. Second, the plan has so many guidelines that you could not actually expect a homeowner to know whether or not they qualify. If you call the lender, they will say, ” we are still in the process of reviewing the plan and we will contact homeowners if they qualify.” When is the last time a lender called you to tell you they were going to save you money and they were going to lose money by reducing their payment. There are many sarcastic lines I could insert here but I will refrain.

Finally, the one area of this plan that is not getting enough attention is the fact that it gives lenders until December 31, 2009 to commit to participating in this plan. So basically, lenders don’t have to enact this plan until the end of the year so it really won’t be available until January 31, 2010. Maybe some lenders will get on board sooner but there is no incentive to do so. There are so many things wrong with this plan because it is not set up to actually help a homeowner. If it sounds like I am frustrated with it, I am because I thought it would help clear some of the financial mess that is getting bigger daily.

Lenders get paid as much as $1000 to modify your loan and if you make payments on time, then every 12 months for the first 5 years you should get $1000 subtracted from your principal balance. However, if your home is losing thousands of dollars in value, there is no incentive with that for you if you could decrease your payments to reflect the atual value in your home. Most people would rather have a lower monthly payment then 1,000 less in principal balance. A lower payment makes more sense and gives the homeowner more stability.

Most homeowners know when they call our office that I ask them if they have talked to their lender. I believe in giving the homeowner tips on how to best modify their loan, regardless of whether or not they are a customer. We are in the business of helping people and that is truly what we want to do. While we don’t charge any fees up front unless we modify your loan, I still encourage homeowners to talk to their lenders to see if they will work with them before going through a modification company.

With this new plan, I would not recommend to my friends or family to do a modification on their own and if I don’t recommend it for them, I wouldn’t recommend it for you either. I understand that homeowners don’t want to pay a fee to someone for something they can do themselves. However, if your lender agrees to modify your loan and saves you $200 per month, but if you went with a company that was experienced in modifications and saved you $500 per month, who would you use? It’s a no brainer. Over the life of the loan it would save you thousands of dollars and even more savings in interest. People go through someone to do their taxes to make sure its done right and also because it might lead to a bigger refund (or less payout to Uncle Sam). This is not that much different.

Ultimately, I’m disappointed that the plan was not better. There was so much hope attached to it and yet it is just disappointing so many people who thought they might qualify.

Have you noticed that this plan is no longer being mentioned in the media online or on television? I think there’s a reason for that. They realize that while the thought might be in the right place, the plan is not going to help very many homeowners.

Will Obama’s Loan Modification Plan Help You?

If your reading this post, you probably know that President Obama introduced a new plan yesterday addressing the housing crisis. There are many pieces to his plan, including loan modifications and refinancing properties that lost value, which target both mortgage lenders, investors, and homeowners.

The article below from yesterday’s edition of the L.A. Times covers the details of the plan:

    http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-housing-assess19-2009feb19,0,3766720.story?page=1

We will be following this development, and we are working on a step-by-step plan to see if this plan can help you modify your loan and ultimately reduce the daily stress in your life.

So far, the biggest disappointment in the plan the President introduced yesterday says that your lender still has to ‘AGREE’ to reduce the monthly payment on your mortgage. As we all know, if the lenders were actually agreeable to working with homeowners, this mess would not be nearly as large as it is now.

However, while the President introduced his recommendations, they are just his initial thoughts on how he plans to solve the housing crisis with a home loan modification plan. The actual plan details will be introduced on March 4th. So I do think the President will tweak some of the areas that did not get favorable feedback in the presentation yesterday. Regardless, there is no one solution that will solve everything overnight. Its going to take a series of measures that will slowly bring back the housing industry and the economy overall. In the meantime, mark your calendars for March 4th to see what the actual home loan modification plan will be.

In the meantime, feel free to give us a call if you have questions on your situation and you need some direction. As always, we’re here to help…

Questions and Thoughts from the Field…

I was talking to a client recently and they asked me how many people I thought would be able to get their loan modified form the applications I had submitted to the different mortgage lenders. I thought about it and I hesitated when I responded to her because of course I’m not really sure how many loans will get approved for modification by the lenders. No matter what anyone tells you, the mortgage lenders will always have the final say. However when I thought about it later, I thought to myself that I should be able to get all of the loans modified that I have currently submitted to the lenders. Some of the submitted applications include clients that are not late on their mortgage and other applications include people that are late on their mortgage (or were late in the last 12 months). For each application submitted, the circumstances leading to the need for a modified loan are justified.

This idea that was/is floating around in the media that people are purposely missing mortgage payments just so that they can get their loan modified is absurd. Nobody is going to purposely miss their payment for .5% or even 1% better interest rate if it means ruining their credit. If you make enough income and your payment is $200 more than the market rate, that’s just life and the majority of people understand this. This is no different than a few years ago when you refinanced and ratelocked a loan at just the right time and received a rate that was .5% or 1% better than others who ratelocked when the market rates were higher. Regardless, people are not going to jeopardize their credit for a lower mortgage rate when it will impact everything else from interest rates on credit card payments, to car loans, etc.

Now I should clarify that when I tell a client that some lenders are only looking to modify loans if you have been late, some do have the response, “well I can be late.” These clients don’t mean that they want to be late on their mortgage. What they are saying is that it is a complete struggle to make their payment and they are maxing out their credit cards or cutting down on groceries and utilities just to make the payment. If the lender is saying “we don’t believe you,” when you tell them your struggling b/c they don’t see any missed payments, its not fair to homeowners who are trying so hard to be responsible. All these mortgage lenders have to review is the verified paystubs and bank statements from borrowers to see that there is not a surplus of money available.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news about the economy but its no secret that it is going to get worse before it gets better. Any struggling homeowners who are not late should look into modifying their loan before it results in a late payment. Call your lender right away. If your bank won’t listen to you, then you can looking into using a company to talk to the bank for you. You have nothing to lose by trying. Calling your lender is always free and using an outside company is also free unless they are successful in getting your loan modified.

Research and Educate Yourself on LM

Did you know that licensed California real estate agent are not permitted to accept any upfront fees to complete a loan modification? This is true for loan modifications or any service performed by licensed agents. The Department of Real Estate requires that the service offered to the client must be completed before a payment can be made to a company. Basically, if you hire a company to complete a loan modification, they cannot charge you until the loan modification is completed.

We all know that most companies out there are accepting payments and then not completing the service. I think when homowners read or hear about this they get scared and don’t trust anyone. However, I think the homeowner just needs to be clear that they will not pay anything until the service is completed. If you need or want a loan modification yourself but don’t have the time or energy to do it yourself, don’t let this keep you from getting your loan modified. Like anything, do your due dilligence before utilizing outside services to help you.

That being said, don’t wait until the last minute to pursue a loan modification b/c you are only hurting yourself. While you are researching your options, you can still get all of your income documents and bank statements together. Once you do that, you can even submit all of the required documents to the lender to see if they can get it done for you without using an outside company. I just can’t stress enough that you should not let what the media is saying about all of the shady practices out there affect your pursuit of more favorable loan terms. Don’t wait to call your lender because you need to be educated on all of the options available to you.

Who qualifies for a Loan Modification?

Most homeowners today are under the false impression that you have to be late on your mortgage to qualify for a loan modification (LM). That is incorrect. There are three main categories that fall under the most likely candidate for a loan modification.

    1) The most common LM is done for homeowners who are currently late on their mortgage or have been late in the last 12 months. Some of these homeowners might also be in foreclosure but that is not a requirement to complete a loan modification. If this is you and you are currently working, you could be a strong candidate for a LM.

    2) If you just had a baby or a family member/friend moved into your home, thus reducing your spending money, you can apply for a LM.

    3) If you are employed but your employer reduced your salary or benefits (i.e. no overtime pay), then you also might be a prime candidate for a LM.

Keep in mind that anyone can apply for a loan modification. However, most lenders require you show hardship or some reason why they should work with you to modify your loan. Whether a homeowner wants me to call for them or they want to call themselves, I recommend that all homeowners communicate with their lender about modifying their loan. Its a great opportunity to see if you can qualify for a lower interest rate without having to refinance.

Interested in a Loan Modification? How to Get Started..

Many homeowners are evaluating whether or not they need a home loan modification. Some of these homowners are late on their mortgage, some are not late, and some are in foreclosure. Similar to refinancing when people wait until the rates are down and then people act, many homeowners wait until they know they absolutely need a home loan modification before they take any acttion.

While I applaud homeowners for taking action, don’t wait until the last minute. I know, easier said than done. However, if you are evaluating if you can afford your mortgage payment, then chances are you probably need to at least talk to a consultant to walk you through some steps to get started with the process.

From a homeowners perspective, what you can do is start gathering your income and asset documentation as well as writing down all of your monthly expenses. In order to begin negotiation with a bank, you will need to put together your 2 most recent paystubs, 2 months bank statements, and your most recent W-2 (2008 when you have it or 2007 if you don’t). If you are self-employed, you will also need a profit and loss statement outlining your income and expenses for at least the last 6 months.

The key to getting this paperwork together is that when you decide to pursue a loan modification, you will have your paperwork ready to get the process started right away. Too often I am talking to families interested in a loan modification and they are late on their mortgage or on the brink of missing a payment. Then I tell them they need to gather their income and asset documents to get started and it usually takes one to two weeks before I receive everything.

I know your busy and you have a lot of stress in your life due to your current circumstances. In order to minimize that stress even a little, start getting your documents together now so you won’s be rushed and adding another stress to your life when you decide to modify your loan and you have to get all the paperwork together.

As always, I’m here to help so if you have questions, feel free to ask..

It goes without saying that amongst the earliest of early adopters to the Palm Pre will be Palm loyalists whose migration from PalmOS to WebOS will surely leave them missing some of the apps that they have grown to love and live by for the past 13 years. To help make the transition easier and allow the fanatics live in the past, MotionApp has obtained special rights to code the only Palm approved PalmOS simulator for WebOS entitled Classic. While it will not be able to access the heart of WebOS, Classic be able to run over 30,000 PalmOS applications at speeds nearly twice as fast as they would run on a Treo 700p meaning that the odds are the crème de la crème of PalmOS apps won’t be left behind. At this time neither the pricing nor availability of Classic has been announced, something we’re not too surprised about given that Palm has yet to tip the world off as to the pricing structure of App Catalog or a release date for the Pre itself.

RIM beats Q4 forecasts, adds 3.9 million subs

In an economic climate where its been mostly doom and gloom, it’s nice to see that a few companies still know how to do one very important thing — turn a profit. One company that has been able to consistently do this over many years is RIM, maker of the BlackBerry smartphone who yesterday released their Q4 financial results. With Q4 revenue 24.5% over that of the previous quarter and 84% above the same period last year, RIM took in a cool $3.46 billion with the bulk of revenue (some 83%) coming from handset sales alone as some 7.8 million devices were sold over the past three months ended February 28, 2009. All told, RIM can now tout a subscriber base of 25 million which helped propel its net income for Q4 ‘09 to $518.3 million ($0.90 per share diluted), a rather impressive increase over the $396.3 million ($0.69 per share diluted) of Q3 ‘09 at a time when both corporations and consumers, who now make up half of RIM’s subscribers, are slashing expenses left, right and center. As for Fiscal 2009, net income came in at $1.89 billion ($3.30 per share diluted), an increase of 46.3% from that of 2008. RIM is expecting to add 3.7 to 3.9 million subscribers in Q1 2010 with revenue in the range of $3.3 and $3.5 billion and an earnings per share of $0.88 to $0.97 per share diluted.

We know that listening to any form of an Apple rumor — especially those that involve to the iPhone — is akin to an hour long session of water-boarding, but you’re just going to have to take this one on the chin for the sake of the team. It seems that the loveable lads over at DigiTimes have yet to have enough fun with their Apple rumor-mongering and are now reporting that Apple and OmniVision have both signed off on a contract which would have the latter produce 3.2 megapixel image sensors for the upcoming iPhone revamp. In addition to this, the same source is also reporting that a 5 megapixel image sensor is also included in the deal which is not iPhone bound but rather for a different product all together which is slated to launch much later this year, perhaps for that rumored touchscreen netbook or “the other” iPhone. We’ll see…

Hands on with the LG Arena

Released in Europe last month, the LG Arena is a handset that easily can get lost amongst the 6,472,891 other full touchscreen handsets spread throughout the show floor this year. While it doesn’t exactly fill any gaps in that realm, it does come with an admirable spec sheet and LG’s new S-Class UI, which is most certainly an upgrade from the company’s earlier efforts. We already saw a bit of LG’s revamped UI on our new phone-crush, the LG GD900, and we really do like it as a supplement for a true smartphone OS. In terms of functionality, it’s not quite what Motorola has achieved with the Evoke’s new Linux-based OS but what it lacks in go it certainly makes up for in show. Sort of. Regardless, the great look of the handset and UI along with the 5 megapixel camera, 3-inch WVGA display, FM transmitter, aGPS, Wi-Fi and the rest of the specs on this able handset will surely appeal to plenty of casual users. Hit the jump for more shots.
