It’s a day early and though some might say it’s still a dollar short, Nokia die hards in close proximity to a Flagship store will be happy to learn the the 5800 XpressMusic NAM is now in stock at Nokia’s retail stores - all set to go on sale today around 3:00 pm. Initial launch details slated the 5800 release for tomorrow but we’re fanboys won’t be complaining about getting their paws on the handset slightly ahead of schedule. The price is set at the reported $399, up from the announced $360, but it’s still a pretty good deal and should tide people over until they get the handset they really want — the N97. Those who took advantage of the pre-order discount opportunity this past Valentine’s Day will be happy to learn that orders will likely ship in the next few days. Woo hoo! So is anyone getting ready to fight the elements and head down to a Flagship store?

Not to rub salt in the wounds of T-Mobile customers who are still crying out for a 3G BlackBerry, but not even the Mighty Magenta could pull off a feat the likes of what Japanese carrier DoCoMo did: convince RIM to add in a fourth band of 3G on the Bold. That’s right, the Japanese Bold that went on sale over the weekend is a quad-band 3G device containing the 2100, 1900, 850 and 800 MHz bands of UMTS/HSDPA. It was wise of RIM to omit this intel from its English press release of course, because it would definitely cause T-Mobile customers to start complaining about the Bold’s lack of of AWS 3G. And just for those of you who are wondering, the 800MHz UMTS/HSDPA band is a part of DoCoMo’s FOMA Plus Area network which is used in rural areas where the low-frequency spectrum is better able to navigate long distances and mountainous terrain. Tell us, T-Mobile 8900 users, are you green with envy that Japan got a special HSDPA band put into the Bold or is UMA enough for you?
Thanks, Jeff!
After a rocky start that is becoming increasingly common for the company, Dell has now officially made its new Mini 10 netbook available for order. The snazzy little netbook first appeared on the site for pre-order a few days ago, then it became available for order, then the pricing changed a few times, etc. All of the wrinkles have seemingly been ironed out now however, and Dell’s newest Mini is available at the proper (and reasonable) starting price of $399. So what does $399 get you?
In a move pretty uncharacteristic of Dell, customization options on the Mini 10 are limited at best. You’ve got a bunch of colors and the option to bump up to a 1.6GHz processor for $50 but beyond that, it is what it is. There is no option for a bigger hard drive or an SSD, no Linux option and perhaps most importantly, no option to toss in more RAM. Remember, word on the street is that there will be no way to add more RAM yourself so tread with caution. Supposedly Dell will be adding a bunch of options later this year (more RAM, Ubuntu, Vista, more hard drives, Bluetooth, GPS, WWAN and a TV tuner) so the early adopter tax is super high - but no where near as high as with the crazies who actually paid the $560 QVC price. Anyone thinking about scooping one up despite all that?

Anyway, back to the movie she just released this previous weekend, “We Own the Night.” If you remember, within the first fifteen minutes of the movie, Eva Mendes participated in her very own sex scene with Joaquin Phoenix. So, if you haven’t seen the movie yet, now would be a good time. It’s worth it.

We need to make one thing clear for everyone. Jenna Jameson is an absolute clown. I’m not talking about a normal clown that is paid to entertain children at shitty birthday parties, but the type of clown you’d expect to see in “Night of the Living Dead.” If she were prancing down the runway with her arms extended and chanted “Brains,” I’d bee line for the door screaming for my life. I’m not saying I’m a pansy, but I am saying I don’t like undead creatures and with the amount of bones showing through her clown suit it appears Jenna Jameson died months ago.

Here are some pictures of some hot blonde girl in FHM. While she looks like Tara
AT&T and Pantech have officially announced the Matrix Pro this morning and while it won’t knock you out of your seat per se, it definitely fairs well as far as bang for your buck is concerned. As the smartphone successor to the dual-sliding Pantech Matrix, the Pro model maintains the same form factor while adding Windows Mobile 6.1 to the mix for a much more capable result. The design of the handset has also been refined to an extent and the specs have be freshened up a bit. Highlights include an upgrade from dual-band to tri-band 3G for the travelers among us, a 2 megapixel camera, aGPS, threaded SMS, Video Share, stereo Bluetooth, microSDHC support and last but certainly not least, a snazzy mirror finish. In terms of pricing and availability, the Matrix Pro will be available beginning next Tuesday, February 24th, for a respectable $179.99 after $50 mail-in rebate. As an aside, if we see “nation’s fastest 3G network” in one more AT&T press release before the company addresses the 3G network speed and dropped call issues plaguing various regions across the country, we might just lose our cool.

You wouldn’t know it from coverage of this year’s MWC in Barcelona but Motorola actually is hiding in a booth at the show. No, really. Truth be told it’s a great-looking booth with a new layout, shiny new graphics and an attention-grabbing design. So what did Moto bring to show off in Barcelona? A diamond-crusted Aura, a whole bunch of Wi-Fi and LTE networking equipment and a handful of already-announced handsets. In other words, its mobile business is struggling, to say the least, and the one new handset Motorola launched at the biggest mobile show of the year is a $7,000+ phone, 50 of which will be manufactured and maybe 15 of which will actually be purchased. Strategy at its finest.
We know Motorola has some exciting new kit coming out in 2009. We scooped a whole bunch of sexy new handsets late last year - a couple of which we’re now hearing will pack Android. “Plan ahead.” The company’s mobile business is becoming less significant by the second so if you were in Moto’s shoes, wouldn’t you want to make a splash at MWC? Maybe you’d pull a Sony Ericcson and do what it did early in the Xperia X1’s life. Show it off but don’t let people touch it. Do something… Anything… Get people talking about Moto and perhaps even a tiny bit excited about an upcoming Motorola phone. But alas - unless you’ve got $7,000 and a penchant for gaudy gear or an engineering degree and a penchant for infrastructure, you can move right along. Nothing more to see here.
It’s no big secret that industry awards are often nothing more than a sham with awards earmarked here and there so that each company can walk away with another excuse for a bad press release. Some of the awards given out this past Tuesday at the Global Mobile Awards in Barcelona however, are making us scratch our heads more than usual. We don’t mean to single out any companies in particular, but when we saw that RIM’s SurePress got the nod for the Best Mobile Technology Breakthrough we were absolutely flabbergasted. Breakthrough in what way? And don’t give us that whole “precision typing and navigation enables a whole [sic] range of applications and features that have not been possible on a touchscreen mobile device” spin that some random PR intern cooked up.
We honestly struggled for a long time to think of a single application for the Storm that is better than any of the alternatives for other touchscreen handsets and we simply couldn’t do it. Now before some of you go off and start whining about how “BGR hates BlackBerry” you should know how untrue that is — there’s room enough in our hearts and on our belts for all phones. If you knew how many BlackBerry devices we’ve owned (and still own) collectively, you’d know how much we love the ‘Berry. The simple fact of the matter is the more time we spend with SurePress the more frustrated we get with it.
If you followed our coverage of MWC this past week, odds are you were just as unimpressed with Acer’s showing as we were. To recap quickly, the company announced a handful of Windows Mobile handsets that were decent efforts but offered nothing in the way of innovation or even differentiation. Touchscreens, Windows Mobile, a UI band-aid, etc. According to a report from PCMag however, our interest in Acer’s new gear may have just been kicked up a notch. What did the trick? A single word — “free”. The report quotes Aymar de Lencquesaing, President of Acer’s Smartphone Unit, as stating the company is working with AT&T and T-Mobile to offer its handsets for free on contract in the US.
While it remains true that none of Acer’s newly-unveiled handsets are smartphones we would actively seek out, the free element completely changes things. As US carrier interest in netbooks continues to increase, Acer plans to use its position in the netbook market as leverage to gain carrier adoption of its smartphones. Smooth. If Acer can indeed manage to pull it off and hock its smartphone wares in the US with no upfront cost, a whole new demographic would have access to fairly well-equipped smartphones - good news all around. Of course we would expect Acer’s Windows Mobile 6.1-powered Tempo line to be the only range of handsets that might come in for free any time soon, with choices from its C1, E1, F1 and L1 possibly being introduced further down the line as Windows Mobile 6.5 handsets begin to launch. Would any of you get reeled in by a Tempo with a $0 entry fee?
[Via Unwired View]

Rogers has just launched three new handsets in the LG Secret, Samsung Gravity and Samsung Propel. Starting off with what is arguably the pick of the pack, the LG Secret has a 2.4″ QVGA touchscreen display, 5 megapixel camera with AF and 30 fps video recording, accelerometer and dual-band HSDPA connectivity. When it arrives in shops it will go for $249.99 on a 3-year or $149.99 on a 3-year when the $7 unlimited browsing or $15 and up value packs are added (old tricks, eh Rogers?). Moving on to the QWERTY handsets, there really isn’t too much there - though we suppose the Propel will find a nice home where a BlackBerry is just too pricey. A 2.2″ 220×176 display, 1.3 megapixel camera, microSD, stereo Bluetooth and dual-band HSDPA make for a pretty decent package at $49.99 for three years. As for the Gravity, it really has nothing but some QWERTY action going for it, what with its quad-band EDGE, 176×220 display, 1.3 megapixel camera and microSD slot. It’ll run you $29.99 with a 3-year contract, but wow… Can you imagine signing a legal document over this thing?

International Women's Day has been observed since in the early 1900's, a time of great expansion and turbulence in the industrialized world that saw booming population growth and the rise of radical ideologies.
1908
Great unrest and critical debate was occurring amongst women. Women's oppression and inequality was spurring women to become more vocal and active in campaigning for change. Then in 1908, 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay and voting rights.
1909
In accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America, the first National Woman's Day (NWD) was observed across the United States on 28 February. Women continued to celebrate NWD on the last Sunday of February until 1913.
1910
n 1910 a second International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen. A woman named a Clara Zetkin (Leader of the 'Women's Office' for the Social Democratic Party in Germany) tabled the idea of an International Women's Day. She proposed that every year in every country there should be a celebration on the same day - a Women's Day - to press for their demands. The conference of over 100 women from 17 countries, representing unions, socialist parties, working women's clubs, and including the first three women elected to the Finnish parliament, greeted Zetkin's suggestion with unanimous approval and thus International Women's Day was the result.
1911
Following the decision agreed at Copenhagen in 1911, International Women's Day (IWD) was honoured the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland on 19 March. More than one million women and men attended IWD rallies campaigning for women's rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination. However less than a week later on 25 March, the tragic 'Triangle Fire' in New York City took the lives of more than 140 working women, most of them Italian and Jewish immigrants. This disastrous event drew significant attention to working conditions and labour legislation in the United States that became a focus of subsequent International Women's Day events. 1911 also saw women's 'Bread and Roses' campaign.
1913-1914
On the eve of World War I campaigning for peace, Russian women observed their first International Women's Day on the last Sunday in February 1913. In 1913 following discussions, International Women's Day was transferred to 8 March and this day has remained the global date for International Wommen's Day ever since. In 1914 further women across Europe held rallies to campaign against the war and to express women's solidarity.
1917
On the last Sunday of February, Russian women began a strike for "bread and peace" in response to the death over 2 million Russian soldiers in war. Opposed by political leaders the women continued to strike until four days later the Czar was forced to abdicate and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote. The date the women's strike commenced was Sunday 23 February on the Julian calendar then in use in Russia. This day on the Gregorian calendar in use elsewhere was 8 March.
1918 - 1999
Since its birth in the socialist movement, International Women's Day has grown to become a global day of recognition and celebration across developed and developing countries alike. For decades, IWD has grown from strength to strength annually. For many years the United Nations has held an annual IWD conference to coordinate international efforts for women's rights and participation in social, political and economic processes. 1975 was designated as 'International Women's Year' by the United Nations. Women's organisations and governments around the world have also observed IWD annually on 8 March by holding large-scale events that honour women's advancement and while diligently reminding of the continued vigilance and action required to ensure that women's equality is gained and maintained in all aspects of life.
2000 and beyond
IWD is now an official holiday in China, Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam. The tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues, etc with flowers and small gifts. In some countries IWD has the equivalent status of Mother's Day where children give small presents to their mothers and grandmothers.
The new millennium has witnessed a significant change and attitudinal shift in both women's and society's thoughts about women's equality and emancipation. Many from a younger generation feel that 'all the battles have been won for women' while many feminists from the 1970's know only too well the longevity and ingrained complexity of patriarchy. With more women in the boardroom, greater equality in legislative rights, and an increased critical mass of women's visibility as impressive role models in every aspect of life, one could think that women have gained true equality. The unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women's education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men.
However, great improvements have been made. We do have female astronauts and prime ministers, school girls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family, women have real choices. And so the tone and nature of IWD has, for the past few years, moved from being a reminder about the negatives to a celebration of the positives.
Annually on 8 March, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world ranging from political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events through to local women's craft markets, theatric performances, fashion parades and more.
Many global corporations have also started to more actively support IWD by running their own internal events and through supporting external ones. For example, on 8 March search engine and media giant Google some years even changes its logo on its global search pages. Year on year IWD is certainly increasing in status. The United States even designates the whole month of March as 'Women's History Month'.
So make a difference, think globally and act locally !! Make everyday International Women's Day. Do your bit to ensure that the future for girls is bright, equal, safe and rewarding.
The International Women's Day website provides a free service to women around the world wanting to share and promote their IWD activity, videos, opinions and ideas. Please feel free to submit gender-related items for the site that you consider relevant and useful.

In 1869 British MP John Stuart Mill was the first person in Parliament to call for women's right to vote. On 19 September 1893 New Zealand became the first country in the world to give women the right to vote. Women in other countries did not enjoy this equality and campaigned for justice for many years.
In 1910 a second International Conference of Working Women was held in Copenhagen. A woman named Clara Zetkin (Leader of the 'Women's Office' for the Social Democratic Party in Germany) tabled the idea of an International Women's Day.
The very first International Women's Day was launched the following year by Clara Zetkin on 19 March (not 8 March). The date was chosen because on 19 March in the year of the 1848 revolution, the Prussian king recognized for the first time the strength of the armed people and gave way before the threat of a proletarian uprising. Among the many promise he made, which he later failed to keep, was the introduction of votes for women.
Plans for the first International Women's Day demonstration were spread by word of mouth and in the press. During the week before International Women's Day two journals appeared: The Vote for Women in Germany and Women's Day in Austria. Various articles were devoted to International Women's Day: 'Women and Parliament', 'The Working Women and Municipal Affairs', 'What Has the Housewife got to do with Politics?', etc. The articles thoroughly analyzed the question of the equality of women in the government and in society. All articles emphasized the same point that it was absolutely necessary to make parliament more democratic by extending the franchise to women.
Success of the first International Women's Day in 1911 exceeded all expectation.
Meetings were organized everywhere in small towns and even the villages halls were packed so full that male workers were asked to give up their places for women.
Men stayed at home with their children for a change, and their wives, the captive housewives, went to meetings.
During the largest street demonstration of 30,000 women, the police decided to remove the demonstrators' banners so the women workers made a stand. In the scuffle that followed, bloodshed was averted only with the help of the socialist deputies in Parliament.
In 1913 International Women's Day was transferred to 8 March and this day has remained the global date for International Wommen's Day ever since.
During International Women's Year in 1975, IWD was given official recognition by the United Nations and was taken up by many governments. International Women's Day is marked by a national holiday in China, Armenia, Russia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldova, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Vietnam.
We’ve been following the Motorola i9 here on BGR since it was just a glimmer in its Boost’s eye. It was finally made official by Sprint / Boost Mobile earlier this month and now we’re closer than ever to Boost’s sleekest handset yet becoming a reality. As you can see, the i9 is now live on the site and while it’s listed as coming soon you can expect that to change to a buy now link before you know it. No real surprises here as the specs and pricing are old news but it’ll be nice to finally see a modern phone come to market from Boost. Maybe we’ll send one Fat Joe’s way… Anyone else getting ready to shell out $300 for this bad boy?
Thanks, Sean!
In a scene right out of a spy movie, an MWC attendee asks an Acer representative about rumored Android handsets and in the blink of an eye, a notebook and a sketch of Acer’s product road map appears. The sketch reveals the presence of two “secret models” under the heading “Android”, not to mention four other not-yet-announced handsets that are slated for release in the second half of 2009. A quick snapshot of the handwritten document is snagged and the attendee flees to share it with the world. No other details are revealed about these “secret” handsets but rest assured we will be on the lookout for them. Maybe - just maybe - they’ll be a bit more current and relevant than, say, these. Hit the jump for a shot of the sketch book.

It’s been out in Japan since November 1st of last year, but this April 5th is as good a time as any for Nintendo to finally launch the DSi in the United States. With the MSRP set at $169.99, Nintendo is hoping that potential customers will be able to overlook the somewhat steep price as a small cost when compared to the advantages the DSi has over its predecessors, the DS and DS Lite. Equipped with a VGA camera on the rear of the system and one on the front which can be used in part to control certain aspects of supported games, the DSi is roughly 12% thinner than the DS Lite and features more spacious 3.25″ displays. A word of caution: If you plan to sell your existing DS/DS Lite and upgrade to the DSi you might want to reconsider if you plan on getting some more mileage out of your Game Boy Advance cartridges - there is no longer a slot for them. Game on!

The pain you must have all felt; Google Maps not being able to take advantage of the built-in GPS chip in your Verizon BlackBerry Storm. What was worse, if you unlocked your Verizon Storm, Google Maps worked fine on any other carrier — something totally weird. Well, good news. Google has just released an updated version of Google Maps for BlackBerry which supports GPS right out of the box, and it also includes Latitude so you can get your stalking on. Of note: Google politely told any other Verizon BlackBerry user (Curve 8330, 8830) to go screw themselves since the Storm is the only device with a third party-accessable GPS chip. For any other BlackBerry addict, don’t get too excited as this isn’t a new release of Google Maps for you, it’s just bringing the Storm handsets up to date with what you already had.

According to Sprint, the Samsung Instinct is one of the carrier’s most popular handsets ever - having broken a variety of sales records shortly after its release. With all those Instincts floating around out there, it stands to reason that a fair number of BGR readers are packing this sexy little handset and today we’ve got some good news for you. Starting immediately, a new firmware version is available for the instinct - ES.M800 CA10 - and it’s bringing along a few slick new features with it. Here’s an unofficial change log, short and sweet:
The OTA update is available now as we mentioned, so impatient readers can initiate the update immediately. Sprint will begin a network-initiated update push this coming Monday, February 16th, though we’re not sure what regions will get it first. No matter though, you know you’re just going to snag it yourself anyway.
Just a few short days after we learned the release details for the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic here in the US, Nokia dropped a little Valentine’s Day surprise on us all. As of today, the 5800 is available for pre-order on Nokia’s site and the price is indeed $399. But wait! Nokia also launched a Valentine’s Day promo to go along with it, giving buyers a 10% discount on any single item purchased or 15% off the total order when two or more items are purchased. In other words, the 5800 will run you $359.10 if you pre-order it today on its own. Throw in another handset or even an accessory such as a Bluetooth headset and you’re looking at $339.15 - not bad at all. Nokia is also offering free shipping on V-Day orders so if you’re thinking about forking over some cash for a Nokia handset in the near future, today is your day. Of course you’ll still have to wait until the handset is officially launched in the US before your 5800 will ship (on or around February 26th), but once it’s in stock you should receive a shipping notification the same day. Any takers?
Thanks, Rich!
Close your eyes if you will, and imagine the awesome piece of kit that might have taken the 8 megapixel skater shot we showed you yesterday. Sleek, sexy, smooth lines. A big, bright VGA display perhaps - maybe even S60 5th Edition and a touchscreen. Gobs of internal memory with microSDHC support as well, and even blazing-fast 3.5G and Wi-Fi to send those giant image files anywhere they might need to go. How about a QWERTY keyboard hidden beneath a slide? Sure, let your mind run wild. Now open your eyes and behold the… Oh wait, never mind. This isn’t the handset Nokia fans around the world are waiting for. It’s just an entry-level candybar with a tiny screen and a 3.2 megapixel camera. At only 12 mm thick, the 5630 XpressMusic is sure to — Oh whatever. It was officially announced this past week and we’re hoping it’s stuffed into a corner at Nokia’s MWC booth this week to make room for some much, much more exciting announcements such as the unveiling of whatever snapped that picture on Friday. Please.
And if your sweetheart is really lucky, a last-minute bunch of flowers.
I have four words for you: Same old, same old.
So, instead of the tried and true — and boring — why not spice things up a bit this year? My suggestion for this Valentine’s season is to create a fabulous Week of Love, starting on Monday, Feb. 7, and leading up to the big day — when you prepare a sensual feast of aphrodisiac foods (which I’ll tell you all about in next week’s column).
Don’t know a crumb about cooking? Let chocolate and flowers (and, OK, cards) do the work!
Studies have shown that as we see red flowers, red cars and even red street signs, the color actually increases our blood flow.
So no matter what flower you like — choose red! In fact, my suggestion is to select a different single flower for each of the seven days. Pick flowers that are sumptuous and rich. (You may need to find a florist with a wide range of exotic blooms.)
Then the cards
Get to the card store early. Most years, the best Valentine’s Day cards sell out early, and since this is sone of the occasions where a card that is late (even by hours) is unacceptable, retailers tend not to overstock.
And buy eight cards — yes, eight. The first seven are for each day leading up to Valentine’s; with the most romantic for the actual day.
Vary the message and design, choose funny ones, sensuous ones and even look for more unusual ones. One category that offers a pleasant surprise is those Valentine’s Day cards that are designed for kids and teen sweethearts!
Finally, the chocolates
To make your seven-day experience complete, present your loved one with a single piece of individually wrapped chocolate each day. Famed for their aphrodisiac qualities, chocolates are a sure way to the heart — and a different selection every day will add to the excitement. I prefer to start off with a heart-shaped dark chocolate leading up to a liqueur-filled, chocolate-covered cherry.
Remember that dark chocolates contain the most antioxidants and polyphenols, the chemicals that give you those warm feelings. It’s the polyphenols which release endorphins, the so-called happy hormones.
And don’t forget…
Timing is everything! And that means, if possible, presenting the seven days of love first thing in the morning. Start off each day with your flower, card and chocolate on a tray brought to the bed or breakfast table. For those who are still wooing, chances are things will have to wait until the evening — but try to make it a regular daily occasion.

Ten percent of the reported 2.3 million couples who get engaged each year in the USA, actually get engaged on Valentine's Day (Source: Diamond Information Center).
It makes sense. Valentine's Day is the most romantic holiday of the year and has always been associated with love and lovers.
As simple as it may sound, the preparations for proposing can be complicated. You know your bride-to-be would love to have a story to share that will let the whole world know how romantic her future husband is.
Here are a few tips to help you come up with the perfect setting to propose to your future bride to show how much she means to you...
If your sweetheart comes from a traditional family, asking for her hand in marriage may be appropriate. You can be sure it will go far to raising your future in-laws opinion of you if you make the effort to show them that you respect them enough to care about their blessings on your marriage.
You've probably witnessed those awful moments when a suitor proposes on national TV...and the answer turns out to be NO! It may seem impossible for you to imagine, but before you go public with a marriage proposal, sound out the bride-to-be, her family and her friends to make sure that you are reading the signals and the answer to you will be a big smile and a big YES!
Prepare ahead of time and make sure your intended will be available for your surprise. Proposing to someone over a romantic dinner is difficult if a business trip takes them out of town for your big day.
Use the media... Your local radio, TV or newspaper may be looking for a romantic proposal idea to feature for Valentine's Day. Everybody loves a lover and on Valentine's Day that is a great way to boost ratings. South Africa's Independent runs a feature of marriage proposing personals that are sometimes serious and sometimes result in strange announcements like, "When I think of your thingamajig I want to... watchamacallit."
There may be millions of couples getting engaged on Valentine's Day, but you are special and when you propose, it should be a reflection of who you are as a couple. Why not retrace the relationship for the big event. Make reservations at the restaurant where you had your first dinner together. Get a scrapbook of mementos - they can be real or you can fake it - ticket stubs from movies you've seen can be made from pieces of colored paper, dried flowers from the first bouquet can be purchased at your local florist...you get the idea. Think of the romantic places you've enjoyed and the things you like to do together and add them to your Valentine's Day Proposal Book. Add a favorite poem or snapshots of the two of you. Get ready and as she comes to the last page in the scrapbook -- which is a page asking her to be your wife -- have your engagement ring ready to slip on her finger. You may even be able to get the waiter to take a picture of you proposing and her accepting to add to the scrap book!
Skywriters are a great way to pop the question, and they may be impressive, but the idea is not the most original and a cloudy day can ruin all of your plans. If you decide to put on an airshow for your future bride, add a little personality to the setting. Have dinner at your favorite restaurant and have the waiters unfurl a banner asking the all important question... go to a sports event and have the banner unfurled from the stands across from your seat during a break in the action... go skiing and have the banner unfurled as you come to the top of the ski lift. You'd be surprised at how willing people are to help with surprise marriage proposals - especially on St. Valentine's Day.
If you live in an area where outdoor activities in February are comfortable, get tickets to an outdoor event and as the sun begins to set have the MC announce that you would like to know if the woman you love would like to be your wife... If you live in a cooler climate do the same thing at an indoor event.
Fortune cookies have come to be a popular place to hide a surprise ring. Steaming them open lets you put the ring inside with a piece of paper that says, "Will you marry me?"
If you have a favorite Chinese restaurant this can be the perfect ending to your Valentine's Day Proposal dinner, but don't stop there. Add slips of paper that tell your love how special she is. Copy some quotations from famous lovers and add those too.
Since Valentine's Day is the 14th, fill 14 fortune cookies with love notes and after she has opened them all present the last one -- with the ring inside. You can also use this idea with other containers.
Stop at your local jeweler or ask the jeweler where you buy the ring for 14 ring boxes to hold your love notes and make the 15th box the real engagement ring; 14 crayon boxes can hold notes telling your love that she adds color to your world; 14 candy boxes telling her how sweet she is; 14 balloons filled with love notes or flower petals make an unusual bouquet and the 15th balloon with your engagement ring inside makes an unusual way to propose... come up with your own version to tell your special lady what she means to you.
If you are a couple who likes simple things - keep your marriage proposal simple. A quiet get away, snuggling in front of a warm fire... You on one knee telling her how much she means to you and that you want her to be in your life forever as your wife... now, that's romantic!
The bottom line is that proposing doesn't have to be elaborate to be romantic. As long as you find a way to tell her what she means to you and that you love her enough to ask her to marry you and spend the rest of your lives together... your Valentine's Day marriage proposal will be a special memory forever...
Without the necessary money to buy costly gifts for anniversaries, birthdays, holidays, or other special occasions, we have been very committed to doing things that were wonderful, yet inexpensive. Over the years, I have learned that these creative ideas are what truly matters and they have made our years together, lots of fun.
Here I have compiled my ideas here to share them with you:
PILL BOTTLE: This is a cute idea for your spouse or other adult. Take an empty pain reliever or prescription bottle and soak it in hot water to remove the label. After you remove the label, design your own label on paper, with something like the following: "Love Pills" - take one as needed. Then take strips of paper and write down the things you are willing to do for your loved one. Some ideas are: foot massage, back massage, your favorite pie, your favorite cookies, you choose the movie we see, etc... Take each strip and wad it into a little ball and place them in the bottle.
LOVE SONGS: This next idea I did before we had internet access, so today it would be even easier to do this. Frame the lyrics to your wedding song or other love song. The internet has several sites that list song lyrics, so just type "song lyrics" into a search engine. Print up the lyrics in a nice font, and frame.
CANDLELIGHT DINNER: When you are not able to go out to an expensive restaurant for dinner, have it at home. Wait to eat until after the children are in bed, set your dining room table nicely with a tablecloth, candles and play soft music. Enjoy a nice dinner...preferably one that you don't usually have, and one that you and your spouse consider to be special.
SWAP CHILD CARE: If you do want prefer to go out for your special day, but find yourself having a hard time paying for dinner *and* childcare, ask a friend to swap child care with you.
CREATE A LOVE TREE: Find a branch outside that has several smaller branches coming off of it and place the branch standing up in a pot of soil, or even a coffee can filled with dirt would work. Cut out an assortment of hearts from different colored cardstock or construction paper and string each one with ribbon. Then have each member of your family write the things that they love on the hearts (one "love" per heart) and hang them on the tree. You can name just about anything you love: a beloved pet, grandma, sunsets, or even ice cream! If you want to create this tree as a gift for someone, write things on the hearts that you love about that person or couple.
RUN THROUGH A MAZE: If you have a gift for someone in your home, make them go through a maze of clues to get to their surprise. At the first "stop" (which should be a place in your home that this person is likely to go to), you should have a little poem of sorts which will tell them to go to the next spot in your home, and so on. At each point in your home have something telling your loved one where to go next until the end which of course will end up being their gift. I had a friend who did this for her husbands birthday. She placed his first note on the toilet since that was the first place he went to when he got home from work, and each note she cleverly told him where to go next in his home. After going from room to room, he came to the end which was a CD that he had wanted.
HEART SHAPED CAKE: If you don't have a heart shaped cake pans, don't despair. Create your own heart-shaped cake by baking one layer in an 8-in round pan, and one layer in an 8-in square pan. Cut the circle in half and place the cut side of the halves against two adjoining side of the square to form a heart. Frost and decorate at desired.
HEART SHAPED COOKIE POPS: Bake up some heart shaped sugar cookies, but insert a popsicle stick near the point of the stick and bake as usual. Decorate.
FLOWERPOTS: Take flat bottomed ice cream cups and place them on a cookie sheet or in a muffin tin (you can wrap bottoms of cones with crumbled up foil to make them more sturdy). Fill cones with 1/3 cup brownie batter and bake 35-40 minutes or until tops are puffed up and cracked. After brownie cones are cooled insert a fake rose in the center. You can also create a flower out of construction paper and secured it on a popsicle stick, and then insert this into the center of the puffed up brownie.
HEART SHAPED CUPCAKES: Prepare you favorite cake mix according to the directions on the box. Line your muffin pans with paper baking cups and fill each cup 1/2 full of batter. Place a marble in each muffin cup....between the paper liner and the pan, which will create the heart shape. Add additional batter as needed so that cups are about 2/3 full. Bake as directed.
GIFT COUPONS: We have all heard of the idea of creating coupons which give of ourselves, but have you ever given your kids some? Why not create a coupon book for your child that has coupons such as: your choice of dessert, kids video rental, lunch out with mom (or dad), etc.
PLANT A TREE: Give a gift that will grow! Without your loved one knowing, plant a tree in your yard. You may also want to make a small yard sign that will sit near the tree and that says who the tree was planted for, and the date.
PROGRESSIVE DINNER: Call up two other couples and arrange a progressive dinner. Everyone will go to the first couple's home and enjoy some appetizers, at the next home you will go for the dinner, and at the last home, you will enjoy dessert. After your progressive dinner, you may want to go out together to a movie or some dancing.

This is a rich dessert that can easily be made in the morning or anytime during the day. It does need to chill several hours.
1 ounce unsweetened chocolate, broken into pieces
1/2 cup light cream
1/3 cup sugar
1 egg yolk, slightly beaten
1 tablespoon butter, softened
1/2 tsp. vanilla
Whipped cream topping
Combine chocolate pieces and cream in medium saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly with wire whisk, until chocolate flecks disappear and mixture is hot. Add sugar and continue cooking and stirring until mixture begins to boil. Remove from heat; gradually add to beaten egg yolk, stirring constantly. Stir in butter and vanilla. Pour into pretty bowls or glasses, cover with plastic wrap directly on surface of chocolate, Chill several hours or until set. Garnish with whipped topping.
The Rest of the Evening
The key to your whole evening is remaining flexible and not putting expectations on each other or the circumstances. If one of the children wake up, even several times, take turns getting them back to sleep. If it's getting late, then eat your meal in the living room while watching your movie! Put down a nice blanket and turn your meal into a picnic. Remember to keep your sense of humor as a parent and a partner. The extras are up to you. You may want to add candles, a nice bottle of wine or sparkling grape juice! You need to get to know each other again as romantic partners, and in turn it will help you become better, loving parents raising your children together as a couple.

Modu had a pendulum-like year in 2008, showcasing with much fanfare a prototype of its modular phone at MWC 2008 only to reportedly lay off 25% of its staff in November. The phone has been plagued by launch delays and a lack of carrier interest in this novel design. Fear not Modu fans as Modu is back for MWC 2009, this time with a production model in hand. The Modu phone features a super small handset which can be slipped into several different jackets providing both fashion and additional functionality to the phone. Think of the old Compaq iPaq and its sleeves but a whole lot sexier and more versatile. The latest production version of the phone has been built to be sturdier with additional memory (2 GB) and a revamped UI. Four jackets will be available at launch and include:
Other jackets, including a bicycle jacket, music jacket and photo frame jacket are expected to be available post-launch. Additional jackets will retail for $25 to $100 each. Dov Moran, founder of Modu, is hoping to release the Modu phone for $200 with two jackets included and is expected to deliver the Modu phone globally at the beginning of next quarter. Hit the jump for some press photos of the Modu phone and its four jackets.
It wasn’t long ago when both Garmin and ASUS announced that they were teaming up to bring the nuvifone G60 to market and promised to out new models soon. True to their word, today the nuvifone M20 was treated to some press release love. Powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, the M20 touts a quad-band EDGE / tri-band 7.2Mbps HSPA chipset, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 4 to 8 GB of internal memory all under a 2.8″ VGA touchscreen display. Did we miss anything? Oh yes, GPS. Obviously with Garmin working on this thing its something of a sat nav monster and will be able to run your favorite LBS services, though if Garmin-ASUS had their way you’d be using Ciao! which sounds like their alternative to Google Latitude. Still, the M20’s GPS chip will work even without the phone itself being connected to a cellular network meaning you can mount the M20 with the included car dashboard mount (with power cable) and drive around like crazy in the Australian outback without having to fear getting lost. Now where’s that Android nuvifone at?
Hold the presses and pull out the kleenex, folks — this one is a definite tear jerker. Samsung has stepped up and made a statement regarding the status of its first promised Android handset and things aren’t looking good. According to the company’s head of marketing, Samsung is delaying the release of its Android phone until the second half of the year. The company had been expected to launch an Android-based device at the upcoming MWC, but this news has certainly put a damper on whatever excitement may have been lingering. Truth be told, this is probably a good move on Sammy’s part as there are still a TON of kinks to be worked out of Android before it’s truly ready for mass adoption. As such, it’s probably smart to sit back and wait as other companies slowly fall in line to be guinea pigs for the cause.

We can’t help but think of the upcoming Helio Ocean 2 when looking at this device - it’s as if Samsung took a good chunk of its design cues from fellow Korean handset manufacturer Pantech. However, it is definitely safe to say that physical design is where the similarities end… As in, hit a brick wall end. This new offering from Samsung, as noted by the ridiculous and hopefully proto-only branding seen in the picture, has audio that is powered by Bang & Olufsen by way of an internal B&O amp. Translation: This thing is going to be the music phone to end all music phones with a price tag to end all price tags. Yes, the volume may in fact go up to 11. Other features include a 3 megapixel camera, DivX support and a 2.8″ AMOLED touchscreen (we’re not sure if it’s capacitive or resistive, but it’s Samsung so we’re guessing the latter). For some odd reason, they decided to add a DJ feature where you can record tracks, scratch and add effects. Rumors slate the release of this device for May 2009, so keep your eyes peeled but don’t hold your breath. We really can’t picture any US carriers with this device any time soon but maybe we’ll get lucky with some quad-band 3G. Yeah, we doubt it too. Hit the jump for more shots of this beauty.

LG announced the launch of its newest flagship multimedia phone this morning, the Arena KM900, and now we have yet another handset to lust after as we wonder if it will ever make it to US soil. To start things off, the Arena features the unique 3D S-Class touchscreen User Interface with a cube-based layout comprised of four customizable home screens that provide access to the major features of the phone. LG is pitching the Arena as a multimedia powerhouse that will incorporate both Dolby and DivX technologies but we’ve seen a few handsets recently *cough-Acme i8910-cough* that are certainly more capable in that area. Move past all that and you’re looking at 7.2 Mbps HSDPA support, Wi-Fi, A-GPS, a 3″ touchscreen with 480 x 800 resolution and two cameras (one being a rear-facing 5 megapixel shooter). Additional details on the Arena, along with some surprises from the sound of things, will be announced at LG’s press conference at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

First there was “Pluto,” then were was “Magnum,” but now we’re talkin’ about something totally different — Gemini. What’s Gemini you ask? From what we’ve been told, the working model number is 9300, so that’s BlackBerry 9300. As you can imagine, the 9xxx line of BlackBerry devices is for 3G handsets and the Gemini won’t break that tradition. We’re told to think of this as the BlackBerry Curve “3G”. While we don’t have specifics on some of them, here’s a breakdown on what we know, and what specs we’ve got a hold of:
Now, what about release date? We have absolutely nothing solid in terms of that. But, want our personal opinion? Q4 ‘09/Q1 ‘10. We really can’t see this one coming out anytime soon, it’s so far down the pipeline, they just released the current Curve replacement, etc. But it should let you guys know that RIM is obviously looking to transition all their devices to 3G (our opinion, not their words) over the course of the next year or so. Plus one of our only complaints about the 8900 was a lack of 3G, so bring it on!
Super duper shout out to our ninjas on this one!
Never mind the fact that they’re just doing it to get free publicity and a head start on pre-orders, we absolutely love it when retailers give it to the manufacturers in the junk and out the specs of their phones just days before they’re official. Expansys is no stranger to this process and has done it again with the Nokia E75. We’ve seen the E75 countless times before and while we want it for reasons we can’t really describe we’re now in a position to say that the E75 won’t suffice to stave off our hunger for the upcoming N97. Why? High cost, a tiny display and poor screen resolution will do the trick every time. If you’re an S60 nut however, chances are you’re going to love what the E75 has got:
So what’s all of this going to cost? Early estimates are that the E75 will ship on March 13 for £389.99 SIM-free ($580 USD) or free on select tariffs from T-Mobile UK. Fail.
